I'm specifically talking about the Spore Drive.

The classification of the Discovery is a good reason for Spock having never mention his Sister.

But as a reason that Starfleet has abandoned the Spore Drive? Come on seriously?? Starfleet abandoned the whole thing based on the classification of one ship? Surely the entire Crossfield class is Spore drive ready, could one of those of not took over? Sure they lost Stamets too but could someone else not pick up his work??

There were already issues with the Spore Drive with having to modify someone to utilize it, which probably ran up against Federation genetic engineering laws.

I personally would have preferred spore aliens prohibiting access but that's just me.

But, I don't have an issue with it.

I have issues because they allowed canon and poor foresight to put them in a corner.

If the Discovery was destroyed, which is what Starfleet was told, then so was the Tardigrade DNA needed by the pilot to make the whole thing work. Most organizations wouldn't put their eggs all in one basket, but this is Starfleet.

My issue is that if Control was really neutralized, why jump to the future at all? It only makes sense if, like in the novelverse, Control is omnipresent in all Federation software and can never truly be defeated. Hopefully season 3 will clarify.
In their defence, they were covering for a mess created 2 showrunners previously.

    Dammit, Bryan Fuller! *shakes fist*

It would’ve took one line, in the episode where Culbar returns Stamets found out the jumps harm the species, this is a guy with an extremely high regard for life. He should’ve shut the network at that point and delivered a bullshit reason why they can’t do it anymore to his superiors.

Or they could’ve simply resisted the urge to use TOS elements in the storyline.

    1. Why would you assume so?
    2. How many Crossfields are there?

Be fair. Spinny saucer? We saw all of them probably...all two...both lost with all hands from a starfleet perspective. The cover up practically writes itself. Which is good since we need that before the series finishes.

Seems like the Glenn and Discovery were the only Crossfield’s involved. I thought Cornwell alluded to that when talking to Lorca.

That was probably some of the weakest writing in Trek. I’ll take the Augment Virus mutated Klingons every day of the week.

Makes sense, as judging from the quality of it no actual writer was likely involved. ;)

I’ll take them in comparison to Discovery’s “canon” patch job.

Why does the Federation classify the Omega particle? I mean, it's incredibly dangerous, but if it works? The possibilities are endless.

Because the Federation is vary of technologies whose advantages are outweighed by how dangerous they are. They were already willing to mothball the spore drive at the start of season 2, remember, and only relented to it being used again to investigate the signals. The use of the spore drive (which was actually already classified at the beginning of season 1, when it was still Stamets and Straal's pipe dream) has several inbuilt disadvantages:

    1) You need a living navigator. You get one of those by torturing tardigrades (of which the Federation after frantic searching never found another one of), or by genetically modifying a human (which is against the law, even if you had another tardigrade sample to use).

    2) Reckless tapping into the mycelial plane can endanger life itself. We saw that with the rot that mirror!Stamets caused with his experiments. That's a pretty big risk, especially given that

    3) The two experts regarding the technology, Straal and Stamets, are dead (allegedly in one case). They were very specialized in their fields of study and research, so unless someone unclassifies their research notes, people might not even know where to start.

    4) As far as Starfleet knows both ships with this technology were lost with all hands by it's use (again, allegedly in one case). That's 0-2 as far as Starfleet knows, not to mention all the other spore drive related stuff, like the aforementioned danger to all life, vanishing into parallel dimensions for nine months while a war rages, or creatures from the mycelial plane abducting starfleet personnel, not to mention the two(!) separate occasions in which the Klingons almost got their hands on a spore drive outfitted ship.

Why put more time and resources into something so fickle, when you can put the same effort into improving more reliable tech you already have?

I don’t believe the Federation would walk away because there would be so much to learn. Besides, I doubt the Klingons and others would walk away.

I figure the non-Spore Drive Crossfield’s look like the teaser version of Discovery.

You can have them all. I'll sell them to you real cheap. Patch jobs in canon I can live with. Viruses that cause ridges to be lost is more difficult for me to swallow.

You could say that about dozens of technologies through out the franchise, and yet the federation did just that. Their behaviour here is consistent with the other TV series/movies.

It's all water on the bridge. Discovery's out of the 23rd Century and so is the Spore Drive.

Without the Tartigrade or Stamets, they can't do any meaningful types of jumps with the Spore Drive. It never turns out to be efficient. Just like when we first see Discovery. And nothing ever gets it to work. Sure some people may want the Spore Drive, but if they can't get it to work, they can want it all they want. They're still not going to have it. And, at this point, who really cares?

The Discovery and the Glenn were the only two prototypes with the Spore Drive. So I'm guessing later Crossfield Class Starships are just conventional starships that just happen to look a little weird. One of the types of ships you see in Spacedock in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, or one of the ships you see in the space debris in "The Best of Both Worlds". That sort of thing.
