Yesterday I finished my second rewatch of Firefly and Serenity, plus the ten year special which I hadn’t seen the first time around. Good stuff! So apparently there are novels set before the movie: Big Damn Hero and The Magnificent Nine, with Generations out later this year.

I’ve read reviews on Amazon and Goodreads but I thought I’d ask here about people’s opinions on them?

Damn good books. If you're a fan of the show, you should definitely give them a look. They definitely feel authentic to the universe and feel as though they could have been episodes. Even though both are centred around a particular character (Mal in Big Damn Hero, Jayne in The Magnificent Nine) both novels fully utilize the entire Firefly cast to their fullest.

    So, yeah. I recommend them.

The third one, Generations, has River on the cover so I’m thinking it will have her as the main. In any case, I want a Kaylee-centric novel.

I like that these books continue where the show left off rather than the movie.

The only Firefly novel I've read is the Serenity novelization by the Trek BBS own Keith R. A. DeCandido. I rather enjoyed it. So did Nathan Fillion, if I recall correctly. I seem to recall him calling out @KRAD about how good it was in some interview or commentary or another.

I'm really hoping KRAD will get a chance to write an original novel. He was actually supposed to write one after the novelization, but then they decided not to do novels at that point.
If they do, I hope they follow on from the comics.

I bought the first one of these when it was on sale a while back, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
I'm hoping they at least do enough that each character will get a novel of their own.

I liked the books. They seemed to recreate the dynamic very well.

    In many different universes, simultaneously.
I just looked these up on Amazon.ca. They are insanely expensive, even the Kindle edition.

Cool, but it is a bit disappointing that we appear to be getting two River focused books back to back.

Check out the graphic novels. The one about the preacher provides some interesting insights into the character.

I’ve only read the first one (Big Damn Hero) but I did like it. A light read with some interesting background reveals for both Mal and Shepherd Book. Where the novel takes place and the plot situations are comfortably familiar. Give it a shot!

Yeah, I do plan on eventually plan on checking out The Shepherd's Tale. I've already read the ones leading up to the movie, and the ones set after it. The only ones I haven't read yet are the Boom! one, The Shepherd's Tale, The Other Half and Float Out.

Actually the stuff about Shepherd Book's background in Big Damn Hero comes from the aforementioned graphic novel A Shepherd's Tale.
