I finally just watched it straight through for the first time myself. I can't believe we covered as much ground as we did. I've wanted to do something like this for a while. Mainly to do something different from all the negative YouTube videos out there. Like Steve Shives from Trek Actually and Jessie Gender do, to name some examples. I think we'll split it up 50/50 between Star Trek and non-Star Trek. We want to focus on different themes in Star Trek, and broader topics that aren't specific to individual episodes. Sometimes we'll highlight sample episodes from across the franchise, but that's all. For Discovery and Picard, we'll probably do season or half-season recaps instead.

Speaking of "Short Treks," can we appreciate just how good "The Brightest Star," was? It is my favorite Trek story since "Waltz," although a different flavor, entirely. I cried. I mean it, this fifteen minutes made me weep tears of joy. What a tremendously thoughtful, hopeful, well-shot, tremendous story! I haven't been this enthralled in a long time. Gene would be proud.

I've been watching TNG with a friend of mine. We watched four episodes: "The Measure of a Man", "The Drumhead", and "Chain of Command" Parts I and II. A thought occurred to me. Jellico reminds me of Lorca. I can see him acting the same way toward the Cardassians and towards the Enterprise crew. I can see the crew of the Enterprise-D responding to Lorca about as well as they did Jellico. Lorca: I don't have time to get to know Will Riker or give him a chance. We have a mission. We have to get it done. And I can just picture Lorca saying and doing all the same stuff in the Briefing Room when meeting with the Cardassians that Jellico did. And then telling Riker and Troi to let the Cardassians think he's a loose cannon.
I don't think so, to paraphrase Saru: "His being from the MU aside, Lorca is the smartest Captain of the whole franchise." He knew exactly what to do and to say to get the best of everyone under his command.
I can't picture Lorca mixing in well with the Enterprise-D crew. He appealed to Stamets' sense of adventure in "Into the Forest I Go" when he said that they'd be able to explore with the Spore Drive after the war with the Klingons was over but he only said that when it looked like they might be all but finished with the war after turning the tide. Beforehand, Stamets was serving under Lorca through clenched teeth. He got the best out of Stamets. That doesn't mean Stamets liked him.
Lorca did exactly what he said he did. He took a bunch of polite awkward idealists and turned them into a group of fierce skilled warriors (including Saru). This served them well, in the battle against Control. So maybe Lorca indirectly saved all sentient life in our galaxy.
I'm not taking that away from him. My comparing Lorca to Jellico isn't saying "I think Lorca sucks!" I like Jellico. I also like Pulaski. There's a subset of TOS Fans who like those characters from TNG.
I like Jellico, and I like Lorca. I’m not sure the first season of Discovery would’ve been worthwhile without his presence. He brought gravitas to the show.
Finishing up re-watching Season 2 of Disco. At this point, I think Saru is better prepared to be the next Captain than Burnham. Not just because he's First Officer but Burnham couldn't go through with releasing Airiam out the airlock in "Project Daedalus". Burnham has no problem sacrificing herself, like she was willing to risk doing in "The Red Angel" but she can't stomach risking others. So not being able to make those kinds of tough calls means she's not quite ready yet. And Captain Georgiou promoted Burnham too fast on the Shenzhou. Not the first time something like this has happened. Kirk promoted Bailey too fast in "The Corbomite Maneuver". Kirk saw something in Bailey that he liked and Georgoiu probably saw something in Burnham that she liked. And probably made some assumptions based on Burnham being raised on Vulcan. Georgiou probably though that Burnham might be more coldly logical than she actually was, and the Shenzhou might not have been in very many situations to challenge that assumption.
If someone from that time gets a hold of Discovery, they should decommission her and put her in a museum. The ship's 1,000 years out of date. And they'll have to get the crew acclimated to their time. Assuming the V'Draysh even accept them. I think Discovery will be an outsider in the third season.
