Just got back home. It's Red Letter Media so, because they're talking about DSC, I'll probably disagree with everything they say. I'll listen to it, but I don't know if I really want to "have at it" because, if I do, it'll look like Texas Chainsaw Massacre by the time I'm done ripping whatever they say to shreds.

Although maybe some people might actually want to see that. :p

Random article I stumbled upon regarding crystals that pulse in time without requiring energy.

According to the article these crystals are quantum structures that resist change and return back to their state, and maintain it without any outside energy. It's a bit dense for the technical speak, so I apologize if I got it wrong.

But, I love how "time crystals" in Star Trek are mocked and yet here is some weird structure that scientists just discovered? :wtf:

300 years ago, people would have mocked the idea of black boxes that can do 100's of different things like play music, allow you to communicate with others, read, etc. They also would have mocked the idea of splitting an invisible particle to unleash unimaginable energies.

But hey, what the hell, time crystals are stoopid I guess.

It makes me laugh so much because Star Trek is constantly lauded for inventing the internet, cell phones, and inspiring generations to go into the science fields. But, the idea of "time crystals" is just too far out there?

I just figure there are times when star trek tries to have futuristic technology (communicators, data slates, padds, remote console hacks, protein synthesizer, hyposprays) and gets pretty close and sometimes even influences people into creating the things they've seen on tv.

Then they sometimes go further down the rabbit hole into technology that is still sci fi but more difficult to find plausible (warp drive, gravity plating, Khan's blood, replicator) but still has a scientific basis, of sorts, kinda

Then there is stuff like the giant green space hand, Q, Flint, V'ger's 82 AU energy cloud flying around at warp speed across the galaxy, esp, telepathy, Barclay having a spider as a genetic ancestor, etc. They're as much a part of Trek as the other bits but they have to be shrugged at occasionally. I just put time crystal in that category in my head. I don't have to figure out how it works. it just does.

I was already pretty sure I wouldn't care for whatever those guys had to say about season 2, and based on that thumbnail, it looks like that was a safe assumption.... not that I've ever been particularly concerned with what they think. I said this in a different thread, but lately I've found it harder to appreciate RLM's content as I've had this sinking feeling that some of their opinions wouldn't be that out of place on channels like Midnight's Edge or Nerdrotic.

I think the escape pod idea is the best one to explain how Georgiou is still in the present. Maybe after killing Control, she realized that going to the future was pointless and she quickly went into one unbeknownst to the rest of the crew thanks to her computer skills which as we know are quite developed.

I watched in completely. Their main complaint is horrible writing, that a lot of things just don't make any sense at all. Not exactly an usual critique. They think the actors are fine, but there is no clear thought out story structure. They think that one reason might be the ridiculous amount of producers. They recorded themselves watching the credits at 18:30. They counted 21 producers credits and think too many cooks might be a reason for it. They like the look of the series, the special effects and everything and think the episodes look like a movie, but overall because of the terrible writing they obviously really don't like DIS. Especially one guy is seemingly so disappointed by the series, that he expects the worst of PIC, too.

That was tough for me to watch, because in a way, even though I don't necessarily feel the same way, I can see their point quite often with the flaws they point out. They even say at one point, "this series sucks for people like us who over-analyze everything," which makes sense because that's not how I choose to intake entertainment. Lots of people do, though. I know a lot of what they are saying is true. It just didn't bother me as much.

I did think they went too far basically saying that only stupid people would enjoy the show. That really pissed me off. I generally get a kick out of RLM's stuff....but that was lazy (ironically) and arrogant of them.

Thanks for saving me the trouble of watching. I hadn't gotten around to it yet, and now I'm not planning to at all. I'm an A/V technician and I have a degree. I'm not some bumpkin. If they can't be bothered to stick just to the show, then I can't be bothered to listen to what they have to say.

I've disagreed with a lot of people over the years. A lot. I don't call them stupid for having tastes different from mine.

They did a whole video several months back talking about their own ideas for the Picard show, which I've got to say were mostly pretty lame and uninspired. I'm not saying that one has to be a creative genius themselves in order to be allowed to criticize something or to be an effective critic, but Picard has the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay as its showrunner while these are the people who made the "comedy" Space Cop. I know who I'd rather have helming a Star Trek series.

That's disappointing, though hardly surprising, since acting like arrogant jerks and resorting to lazy jokes and insults is kind of par for the course with those guys. It's of no real importance to me if their opinions differ from mine, but I guess what does bother me is that they've got a large audience who seem to treat whatever they think as gospel.

Disco can't withstand too much analyzing (too many plot holes):
  • 1) Who sent Spock the seven signal info? We know it can't be Michael's mother.
  • 2) Who framed Spock for murder, how and why? That was never explained.
  • 3) Where did Michael's mother get a device that brings people back from the dead?
  • 4) Where did she get another device that transports people across the galaxy?
  • etc...

1. Gabrielle Burnham said she reached out to Spock in "The Red Angel". I just re-watched it.
2. Control. Explained in "Project Daedalus" by Saru. Control faked the video of Spock and faked the Admirals' transmissions. Why? To eliminate anyone who knows about or can find out about Control's true motives.
3. From the future. Probably on Terralysium, where she lives.

Yes it can. Things only don't make sense if people don't want them to make sense. Or if they forgot what the characters plainly say. Which happens. Not everyone remembers what's said in an episode line-by-line, word-for-word. It's understandable. But sometimes people are too focused on reacting to episodes and finding things wrong with it, rather than actually just watching. So that's how we get people like RLM and others. And they seem to think if they repeat the same (incorrect) opinions, assumptions, or conclusions enough times, we'll all start to think it's true.
