iZombie Season 5

Blaine is so terribly, ruthlessly great. Watching their little mob show unfold is more fun then the morgue/investigative aspect, which when present is grating and unoriginal, or is just overlooked in general. This episode sums up the season.

I loved how Don E was trying to get Liv to have a vision. He knows how the show works.

It's kind of whiplash-inducing seeing them suddenly reintroduce Liv's mother and her family connections after years of their absence from the show, and it's contrived as hell to retcon in a biological father that turns out to be one of the season's big bads, but at least they're finally refocusing on Liv as a character with her own emotions and motivations rather than just the blank template for the extreme brain persona of the week, and that's refreshing. It was nice to see the real Liv fighting back against the disruptiveness of the brain persona, instead of just completely surrendering to it as usual.

It's funny, only recently I was trying to remember if they ever established anything about Liv's father, and then they go ahead and do so. Though, truth be told, as soon as the matter was set up in the conversation between Liv and her mother, I just knew they were going to go ahead the evil zombie working with the rogue Filmore-Graves guys was him.

I was not expecting Major's friend Justin to go traitor though, and it is kind of interesting seeing things take a dark turn for Major. I especially liked French Inspector's reaction to learning Major's not as weak as he believed.

This year already has me less interested then any of the previous years. For a final season, this doesn't seem to be very well thought out. The pacing, buildup and structure is nonexistent.

I'll admit, they do seem to be jumping all over the place and we go weeks without certain story threads being touched (example, Blaine's storyline wasn't touched this week, this week was also the first time Clive and Michelle's issues were brought up in weeks, the zombie sitcom seems to have been forgotten) but they do seem to be building to something with the Freylichs(sp) syndrome, Major's descent into darkness and the renegade Filmore-Graves soldiers working with who we now know is Liv's dad.

Which might be budgetary -- they can only afford so many cast members per episode, so a given character may only appear in a certain number of episodes per season. Not uncommon in shows' later seasons where they need to cut their budgets to stay on the air.

Everything with Liv's dad..... is oh so contrived and convenient..... although in its own way, it may just bookend the series just fine..... just wish it had built up over the seasons.

The government is atrociously incapable, and again, lots of conveniences just to drive the plot along.

Hi, Zombie!

I don't know why no one from Seattle is opposing the misrepresentation of Zombies as the Undead when they are just people with a disease. The zombie disease Is actually a miracle cure with some *terrible* side effects, but no Zombies are DEAD.

Meh, people can be notoriously stubborn to change their ways. Everyone's used to thinking of zombies as being dead, and that's how they still continue to think of them in Seattle.

I guarantee you, in the event that something like iZombie zombies really did exist, everyone would still refer to them as being dead regardless of the facts of the situation.

Yeah -- so our main character's estranged father just happens to be the creator of the drug that started the zombie epidemic, and the very first zombie to boot? That's just taking coincidence to an absurd level.

AND the guy they are already looking for, the guy that knows the exact formula for tainted utopium, that can make a real cure.

I'd think the exact opposite; people would complain that it is dehumanizing, and since the personalities stay completely intact, there is no actual reason to look down on (the person that is the same person you always knew), just because they have this blood disease. I don't think the word "zombie" would even be the "mainstream" word used, and would probably come to be seen as a slur.

Well, yeah, I think that's the point. Hate speech is never rational or fair. The problem with what's depicted on the show isn't that bigots are using the slur -- it's that nobody is calling them out for it and correcting their misconception. The show seems to be treating the claim that zombies are "dead" as if it's actually true rather than just a bigoted slur, and that's strange.

People would complain, but it would still go on. Just like people use unfortunate slurs toward people of different races and sexual orientations today.

Actually, thinking about it, given the show does treat human-zombie relations as an allegory for race relations it is kind of surprising they haven't gone in for zombies objecting to hearing the D word used towards them.

I'm glad Ravi and Peyton figured out that they were looking for Liv's dad as soon as they did. Seems like this episode did it's fair share to move the story along.

One thing I'm slightly confused by is DonE's girlfriend. Isn't she valuable because her brain holds the cure to zombieism, but if she's fooling around with DonE, she'll turn into a zombie and her brain will be useless? (Since becoming a zombie obviously magically cures all fatal human diseases.) Is that what we're supposed to think, or am I missing something?

The way Ravi discovered the cure in the first place was because Isabela Vidovic's character last season was immune to the zombie virus -- she didn't change when Liv scratched her. That immunity is the source of the cure. So Don E.'s girlfriend would presumably also be immune to zombieism.
