MLB 2019: Mad Max Beyond Astrodome

It's a damn shame the Marlins swindled that albatross of a stadium out of Miami, because neither Florida team should be there.

The Rays only exist because of lawsuits and the threat of lawsuits, same reason the Mariners and Royals exist.

If MLB had their way they would still be at 16 teams.

At least the Rays are a good team.

The Marlins have absolutely nothing going for them on any level.

The Rays have the biggest discrepancy between weekday/night attendance and weekend attendance in the majors. Getting from Tampa (where the fans are) to St. Petersburg (where Tropicana Field is) is a stone cold bitch. If you're a Rays fan feel free to check out my weekly column on the Rays here.

Ahhh...I didn't know that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Meanwhile, Frankie Montas has been suspended for 80 days and is ineligible for the playoffs after testing positive for using a performance-enhancing drug.
The assholes who run baseball waited until the day after Montas pitched 8, 1 run innings against the Rays to announce the suspension. :brickwall: Should have added this link to back up the claim about the weekend vs. weekday attenance discrepancy.

What are you talking about? MLB loves expansion and Manfred has made it known he wants to go to 32 teams. Every owner would get a chunk of the expansion fees, which would come out to around $70 million per owner. They'd love that shit.

Yeah, not even the Dinger Machine. :(

So apart from Tampa moving to Montreal, which would be the most likely cities to score an expansion team if Manfred has his way?

I'd love it if Omaha could get a team (we built TD Ameritrade Park to be expandable to MLB capacity if need be, and in fact we actually HAD a major league game here just last week), but unfortunately that's not very likely. :sigh:

Hell, not only do we already have a park, but there'd be a ready made rivalry with the Royals...

There really aren't any straight-shot candidates. Manfred has said he wants a team in the Eastern time zone and another in the Pacific time zone. Realistically, the only Pacific cities that could take on an MLB team would be Las Vegas--which is undesirable, given MLB's gambling history--and Portland, which is equally untenable because the Mariners would raise holy fucking hell and that city hates baseball so much they turned their minor-league stadium into a soccer stadium.

^ Vegas already has the Golden Knights and (soon) the Raiders. If it's desirable for hockey and football, why not baseball?

The weather could also be a problem. Not just for the fans, but the players as well (when the 51's were the Mets' AAA team, players used to hate it there because of the "dry heat").

Portland, which is equally untenable because the Mariners would raise holy fucking hell

That'd probably rule out Vancouver as well.

How many people from Vancouver are going over the border to see Mariners games besides when the Blue Jays are there?

Quite a lot, actually.

When I was in Seattle a couple of years ago I toured Safeco Field and the host said that there are a lot of fans who come down from Vancouver. What with Seattle being closer than Toronto and all that. ;)

And of course James Paxton drew a lot of Canadian fans (the "Maple Grove") when he played there.
