MLB 2019: Mad Max Beyond Astrodome

WS hangover, thinking they deserve to win again just because they did last year... I dunno, but something is definitely not working this year. Don’t think it’s all attributable to luck, last year or this one, but same group and it’s just not working this time.

It's not unlike 2013/2014, except this team has a lot more talent than those teams did. In fact, they have too much talent to be so ordinary. For that reason it's a bit puzzling why they are so uneven this year. I agree it's more than luck, or lack thereof. Last year you had the feeling that they could win any game, even if they got behind. This year, the feeling is much different.

^ And we all know it'll be Montréal. I have no problem with that.

(Unlike the Rays, who haven't done jackshit, the committee that's trying to bring a new Expos team to Montréal already has a site for a new ballpark, and I think they're trying to have it fully paid for without public money)

Huh. So if the Rays go to Montreal, do they stay as the Rays, change to the Expos (I'm guessing someone else owns that name and the Rays won't want to pay for it), or choose some other name?

Probably belong to the Nationals.

History should belong to a city not a team, it's sort of revolting to see Minnesota celebrate a title that happened in Washington or the Cobb County Braves celebrate titles won in Boston and Milwaukee.

You leave a city, the history should stay behind.

I absolutely agree. I still hate that the Nationals went with that name because they couldn't use the Senators

I also think there were far better names than the Nationals they could've chosen such as the Capitols, but I digress...

There are literally no direct flights from Tampa to Montreal. What the fuck?

Edit: Logistically, there's no way this would work. This is either a ploy to get Montreal to publicly finance a new stadium (not happening) or to scare Tampa into building a new stadium.

A team share thing could work if the cities were close to each other, not thousands of miles apart, in different countries, speaking different languages.

The Cubs' first homegrown pitcher in a long time, Adbert Alzolay had a nice ML debut yesterday.

I'd have liked to hear Harry Caray try to say "Adbert Alzolay" forwards, let alone backwards.

Well, that would be refreshing

Given what we know now, I don't think Tampa getting an MLB expansion team was well thought out.

It wasn't. Jerry Reinsdorf was locking horns with Mayor Daley about getting tax credits from the City of Chicago on the construction of the new Comiskey Park, so he called some of his rich buddies down in the Tampa / St. Pete area, who twisted some arms in city government and got them to say, "Why, yes, we'd love to have the White Sox move here! We'll even build them a stadium!" So that's when construction of the Trop began ... but Reinsdorf was never going to leave Chicago, and everyone knew it. Eventually he got his tax credits, and Tampa Bay was left holding the bag. The Trop was basically empty, outside of I think soccer, a year of hockey and some occasional concerts, until the Rays franchise was awarded to the city.

At which point it was still empty, right?
