So it wasn't that they were asking for too much money, it was literally that teams were waiting for draft-pick compensation to detach.

Fuck the union and its toothless fucking leadership.

Shot in the back, out the gut. Says he underwent surgery and is stable, but what a shit situation. Hopefully out of danger. Wonder if he considers not going to the DR anymore, or having to carry bodyguards. Not that being in the US is overly safe from gun violence...

Nothing good ever happens in clubs, especially late at night. No idea if this happened late at night though but I'm guessing he will rethink where he goes from now on.

Not sure exactly (obviously), but in the video, it's sort of an outside, open air café-looking area. Club district, but not sure if he was at a club, per se. He's sitting at a table with someone, and guy comes up from behind and shoots him in the back. Originally reported as a robbery, but clearly not, looks like more of a targeted attack or hit.

Either way, reportedly in stable condition but in ICU. Lost gallbladder, part of colon and intestines. Not good, but that looks to be the worst of it per the latest reporting.

And because the DR operates a little differently than the US, the shooter hasn't been interviewed yet. Mainly because the crowd jumped him and beat him pretty good, so he has to recover a bit before he can be questioned. Sorry not sorry ;)

Never know what Ortiz may have been caught up in, or how much is a persona vice how he acts in private, but hard to imagine him being caught up in something like this, always just a big teddy bear and kind heart in public facings at least...

Yeah, we know a little more now. I should know by now that initial reports these days change about 18 times before we know what really happened.

Danny Farquhar is back in AAA for the Yankees.

Amazing shit, considering the dude almost died (and would have had he been at most other MLB stadiums; Guaranteed Rate Field is like five minutes away, at ambulance speed, from a world-class trauma center and that simple fact saved his life).

Actually heard a good line on the Atlanta Braves broadcast tonight. After the third Braves hit going against the shift, Chip Caray said, "I guess as far as Keller (the Pirates pitcher) is concerned, the "f" in shift is silent."

Bryce Harper rockin' a 0.7 WAR and trending to have about the same season as last year. Maybe not the most overrated player in the game but close.

In other news, my Red Sox suck. They may still get their act together and compete for a wild card spot but even if they get it, they won't go far.

WS hangover, thinking they deserve to win again just because they did last year... I dunno, but something is definitely not working this year. Don’t think it’s all attributable to luck, last year or this one, but same group and it’s just not working this time.

The Major League Baseball Umpires Association called Padres star Manny Machado's one-game suspension for making contact with an umpire a "slap in the face" in a Facebook post Tuesday.

The quality of work by many of those umps is a slap in the face to baseball. Whatcha gonna do?

Eloy Jimenez sticks it to the Cubs, hitting the GW homer off "bad" Strop.

Man, we really need Kimbrel closing games. Strop is flip-a-coin whether he blows the other team away or just blows it.

Of course, if the Cubs are back in 1-run mode, it won't be hard to beat them.

Jed Hoyer says Kyle Hendricks has a shoulder impingement, could be out until the All-Star Break.

Ugh. In baseball, "impingement" is usually code for "his rotator cuff is shot."

Double ugh: Chatwood is spot-starting in Hendricks' slot tomorrow.

Edit: Was doing some data dredging. The Cubs are .667 at home and .417 on the road. The only team with a bigger disparity in home vs. away is the Rangers, who are .658 at home and 0.400 on the road.

Kimbrel had a strong first outing in Triple-A, easily getting three batters out with pitches in the mid-90's.
