There are indeed many reasons, but I'm pretty sure that can be one of them.

So the third “holy shit” moment was one of these:
    Dany burning Kings landing
    Jon killing Dany
    Bran becomig King

Yep, it has to be one of those three. I am going to guess that it was Dany burning King's Landing--and it was a WTF moment for a lot of people.

Dany burning Kings Landing and Jon killing Dany were semi-expected moments that were more WTF for how they were handled. Can't for the life of me understand why they didn't have Rhaegal die during that battle to give Dany a little more motivation for what she did.

Bran becoming king was WTF in every sense of the word, although that whole dragonpit scene was pretty bizarre.

Yeah, I would say it's Bran because the other two had been predicted many times for a long time.

I heard the writers of Westworld changed loads of the second season because fans already predicted everything. I imagine something similar happened here.

    People laugh.

But if he really did enjoy his job and loved the people he worked with I can see it being devastating.

When I moved to teach in another school I was depressed for weeks. I left on good terms and my move was to further my career but it still sucked. Even though I worked at that school for only one year, with the relationships I built with staff and students alike and the progress I saw being made it was devastating to leave.

Kit was working for 9 years in what seems like a close knit group so what I felt is probably multiplied 9 times with him. In some ways its probably like grief.

He might be filthy rich, but it still doesn't negate the feeling of loss he is feeling.

No, but it can trigger addictive behavior in people prone to it.

The trouble with Dany or Jon becoming King isn’t so much that it’s predictable so much as both results were so insisted on by the story to that point the narrative structure of television shows demanded a different result. If Dany did just walk in and become Queen it would feel lije GoT was the story of Dany and trivialize everything else that happened. If Jon did, it’d seem like too pat perfect a result for GoT. It needed to be someone credible, who tied together all the show’s major threads, but not elevated to front runner at any point.

Bran was surprising but I think Tyrion’s speech justified the choice. Everyone alive at the end agreed they wanted peace with each other. Anyone who was ostensibly qualified was hated by someone and anyone who wanted it was a small dog nobody who nobody would ever rally behind. So the only reasonable choice was a liked person with a good narrative that everyone was happy to go through the motions and bow to so long as he would mostly leave them alone.

Is Bran well liked? Who even knows him outside the North? Not sure anyone is going to be particularly impressed by this freaky guy in a wheelchair, especially since he was just like ‘okay, whatever’, when Sansa told him the North wouldn’t be part of the Seven Kingdoms anymore.

I’m sure someone on this thread has already made this argument, but someone who cannot produce an heir is the worst choice for king. The whole damned war kicked off because there wasn’t a clear successor!

I think Jon was the natural choice, even if it was a little predictable. Kinda surprised they didn’t go for Gendry.

This reminded me of the end of Deep Space 9. Rom becomes Nagus, Worf becomes an ambassador. Bran becomes king. What?? Heh?? Just like that? What did any of them do earn such a thing?

Both of them had better stories, too, in terms of stories that people would be able to relate to and understand.

Son of a beloved prince, raised believing himself to be a bastard. Joined the Night's Watch to find a place for himself in the world. Fought wildlings and the dead Beyond the Wall. Defended Castle Black against wildlings. Elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. United the black brothers and the wildlings to fight the army of the dead. Betrayed and murdered by his own brothers. Resurrected by a red priestess. Freed Winterfell from the Boltons. Acclaimed King in the North by the northern lords. Surrendered his crown to gain allies in the war against the dead, placing the good of the people above his own pride and position.

Bastard son of a beloved king, raised on the poor streets of King's Landing. Trained as a blacksmith until a vindictive queen (or illegitimate king, you pick how this piece gets told) decided to have him killed. Fled the capital to join the Night's Watch. Joined the Brotherhood Without Banners to fight for and protect the smallfolk*. Discovered his true heritage when his own uncle sought to use him as a sacrifice to the red god. Escaped with the help of a good man, an advisor to two kings. Traveled north of the Wall with Jon Snow et al. Fought in the Battle of Winterfell against the army of the dead. Legitimized and named Lord of Storm's End by Queen Daenerys.

(* For the myth making aspect I feel this would be included, even if in the show it's a slight stretch.)

Either of those two stories would mean a great deal more to the remaining lords of the realm and the common people. Who the fuck knows what a "three-eyed raven" is? All they would know is this is some creepy kid named Stark; and those at the council should be able to conclude more than that from his comment to Tyrion.

They weren't forced to do anything. HBO was OFFERING them more time (and money) to continue and end the story (it is/was the most successful and profitable HBO series in the channel's history); but they were tired of it and WANTED to just wrap it up and move on (since they were getting other offers).

I get that they wanted to move on; but no, it's not the case that they were 'forced' to wrap it up fast.

Obviously they weren’t chained to their desks, but the main point I’m making is that they were going without the books, and it’s not like the publication of The Winds of Winter is just around the corner. They could have waited another year or two and still might be without the books.

I do think they should have drawn it out a bit more, but I also think it’s unfair to put so much blame on them.

The only reason in story it couldn’t be Jon is that he killed Dany and making him King would cause Unsullied and her other Essos fan clubs to get murdery.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dario Naharis personally came after Jon.

I agree if it weren’t for that Jon would make more sense. But Gendry? Nobody would go for him. Robert was hardly well loved, he was known as a drunk. And if you go the direction of Gendry you’re reinforcing the genetic succession that gave us Jaffrey. Bran might not be personally well known to all but the Starks are, and they are free to jazz up his story however they want to make him exciting.

And I like Tyrion’s attempt to set up a succession process that isn’t about genetics. After Jaffrey I think everyone would agree automatically going to the son is a bad idea.

By the nobility of Westeros, sure. The common folk liked him just fine, though.

Granted, that was likely due in no small part because of his drunkenness...
