Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Too bad this isn't the things that frustrate thread because as far as I am concerned the last exchange certainly qualifies.

I am going to award you the "Just Shut Up" award for today. Someone once said that there is no such thing as a stupid question. I believe you have proven him to be in error.

The chances of being killed by a falling tree: https://naturenet.net/blogs/2007/02/19/killed-by-a-falling-tree-what-are-the-chances/
I don't remember much from college stats, but it seemed that the way the question was framed had a big part in determining whether you could get a number that actually means anything.

When I was an engineer back in the dark ages, we had a fellow on our staff named Vorel who was a little weak in his math skills and we invented a term called Vorel's Fudge Factor which can be defined as that number which, when added to, subtracted from, multiplied by or divided by the answer you got gives you the answer you should have gotten.

Yeah, it was back when people asked you for more salt on their fries.

Put simply your chances of being hit by the tree in your silly scenario are exctly zero. It takes much longer than a second for a tree to fall. Even someone stupid enough to stand under a tree for 1 sec./day should escape unscathed. Got any more silly questions?

Well, if I need any more idiotic responses, I'll be sure to let you know.:D

The odds of getting hit by a tree would have to take into account the odds you are not in a position to pay enough attention to notice it falling. If the tree is weak enough to fall it will probably fall under high wind first, and under those circumstances you are probably less likely to be outside and more likely to be attentive if you are.

Now, the odds of getting a bump from a falling branch might be more reasonable.

What's not reasonable is to start a conversation about Math with people who don't know the first thing about it. Lesson learned.

Your conversation about "math" was not recognizable as such by a person whose work required the use of mathematics every day for 40 years.
