There was another poll released by Ipsos this week that was more favourable to Ford, but it still shows a massive collapse in his support.

    OLP - 32% (19.5% on election day)
    OPC - 30% (40.5% on election day)
    ONDP - 29% (33.5% on election day)

I think it's pretty clear that people voted OPC last year to kick Wynne out of office and now that she's gone they're ready to go back to the Liberals. Also, Horwath really needs to step down.

No one likes cuts, but the McGuinty/Wynne Liberals were lousy managers and put Ontario in a serious financial hole while ruining Ontario health care. Teachers have fought with every administration, regardless of political stripe going back decades, even as enrolment goes down and student abilities have declined as well.

Everyone screams about money being wasted within government whether it be federal, provincial or municipal, but it’s always “somewhere else” and never “with us” in their own area.

We also live in an age of whiners where government is seen as a bottomless pit of money even as they complain about taxes yet they still expect the government to pay for every goddamned thing.

Heavens, how did our parents and grandparents manage things with little to no government assistance?

So the whiners from the usual suspects aren’t getting much sympathy from me. We have reached a point of unsustainability where a helluva lot of money is being spent to pay just the interest on Ontario’s debt, money that would be greatly appreciated for the services people want. If belts aren’t tightened periodically then the fallout comes later and no one will be happy with it.

No one can run with endless ever increasing debt—not an individual, a household, a business or a government. It eventually hobbles everything.

The biggest mistake the tories made was getting ford as leader (which I'm sure rankled quite a few given the way he jumps for the leadership when it's s dead certainty that the tories were going win).

he's going on about the carbon tax while omitting to mention the provincial cap n trade system that dealt with the issue and was worth billions to the provincial coffers. The auditor-general has taken the govt to task over the ads which she deems as misleading but after the liberals gutted the relevant ad there's nothing she can do about it.

he's changed the account rules that applied since harris was premier so he could inflate the deficit to justifiy his cuts while wanting to give even more tax cuts to the big end of town.

Fix the fucking deficit then look at tax cuts cos there's fuckton of evidence (starting with trump's tax cuts last year) that cutting corporate taxes does not provide any stimulation to the economy or lead to much in the way of job creation.

And to paraphrase a recent Star article - how can a provincial budget as big as the last one do so little?

I think many tories are thinking they're safe for second term because the liberals are in disarray and well down on numbers in the house and for fundraising. They need to look federally. In 2011 the federal libs wound up in the same place their provincial counterparts are. Four years later they replace the tories as the federal govt.

Come October if the ford factor hurts the tories at the federal election there's going to be some very unhappy people.

In a lot of cases... they didn't. And things were pretty terrible for a lot of people. I'm always wary about holding up the past as some shining example, because usually the past was much worse than today. Our society is supposed to have progressed from those days.

Yes, in many cases things were worse. And not everything about the past was great. But their was a good dose of self-reliance and little bellyaching about having to do without.

So ford is claiming to lead a govt that listens after reversing course on the retroactive budget cuts yesterday.

Yet it's on the same day that several opinion polls came out that show the govt is stinking like last week's fish.

To borrow from a tv character, there's no such thing as co-incidences.

doubly so when he had a sit down interview with Global's Queen's Park report where he flat out said the cuts were staying.

    https://globalnews.ca/news/5306599/premier-ford-budget-cuts-abortion-taxes/

And then we have the news the government is going to break the contract with Beer Store and simply thinks they legislate away the legal ramifications (just as they did when cancelling cap n trade).

Can see it now - two prolonged legal cases that will cost millions before the province gets taken to the cleaners for breach of contract.

If nothing else it's not a good message to send that a govt can simply cancel contracts on whim and avoid the consequences - it's not a very good business message.

I didn't like Wynne, but I also didn't vote PC, but ouchie. Ford's government sounds like they're skating on thin ice, but completely oblivious that that ice may crack at any time because they're all too concerned about having a tailgate party.

the NDP is wanting to know why the tories are so keen on tearing up the deal on beer store but not so keen on re-opening the deal on the 407 even though ford was critical of the privatisation/lease that the the harris govt did.

Yeah, I dunno. I think we live in interesting times to say the least. I might end up not voting for any of the major parties next time around.

The Greens are surging all across the country. A vote for them might not be a wasted vote by 2022.

Yeah, I'd be favour of voting for the greens, but except in certain cases, they almost never seem to get majorities.

You say that like it’s a *bad* thing.

In a lot of ways, I think I prefer minority governments. It can prevent the government from going too far one way or the other, since they need support from another party to survive.

(Besides, the Greens have never even formed a government before, so it seems a little odd to criticize them for not getting majorities.)

Haha, yeah, that's true. I guess I really meant a main opposition rather than majority and given that the environment is only getting worse, I think we'll only be seeing more of them, and frankly, I think they have a lot of great ideas that don't just relate to the environment.

So, it turns out that on June 29, it will have been one year since Doug Ford was sworn in as premier. Happy Fordiversary!

What would a one-year mark be without a look back?

'For the People'. Riiiiiiight. If he really were for the people, he wouldn't have cut health care so drastically, among other cuts. Among other things, it really feels like he has no idea how to govern. Everything else he's done seems so random, as if he's spinning a wheel every morning to decide what to do; The Wheel of Misfortune. That whole beer store thing comes across as something he thinks will make him popular by allowing him to make a play for the beer in corner stores, but will end up making him extremely unpopular due to how expensive his play will turn out to cost taxpayers. How he can justify moving forward with that while making cuts to important things like health care is beyond me.
