Picard Series Will Be a 'Psychological' Look at His Later Years

I'm a sucker, unfortunately.
I think I've finally broken the cycle of compulsion.

Having some new thing branded Star Trek probably makes me less inclined to embrace it rather than more so, nowadays.

Doomcock and the like are going to compare this to what TLJ did with Luke. But honestly a sort of "wounded old man" story is the only way that Patrick Stewart was going to come back to the franchise, given he had turned down more "regular" reprisals of the character again and again.

Doomcock* is entertaining (unlike certain others, who I will not give free advertising to), but I did appreciate the idea behind Luke's Icarus-style fate (even if the script felt like a rough draft and needed honing at times)... and Doomcock, ME, and Mecha do sometimes forget that TOS characters like Kirk, Spock, Chekov, and Scotty had tragic, not-stereotype-heroic, or disrespectful (perceived or real) finales as well in the franchise. Well, Scotty and Spock had a bounce back but their special episodes were so grossly contrived (and Spock's had more potential, squandered even faster than promoting a cliche caricature of ageism - hmmm, if MarySue/MartyStu discuss sexism, what name can we give to those who promote ageism cliches**?)... At least Doohan got to prove he was one hell of a dramatic actor but in such an uneven script. :( But I digress.

But at the same time it's becoming so overused and trite that maybe it is a good idea to let old heroes not get dug up for retrospectives or to have tragic endings. So it's hard to blame Doomcock, et al, because it's so trite at this point. Can't blame them for that.

But this is Sir Patrick, the guy who said he was done with Picard last decade. He must have read some outlines or scripts and thought they were something special and wanted to return. That's enough for me to want to watch, unless the scripts only reinforce the ruination of Picard. It could go either way. Let's see what happens, let's hope the premiere episode is more than the sort of Gen-X stereotype that was plastered unto people 25 years ago.

* performance artist or otherwise**...

** but that discussion is beyond the scope of my immediate response if not this thread's primary discussion concept

A person of great accomplishment can still wind up old and alone.

I wouldn't mind if they revisit the dementia element of AGT. That's an increasingly relevant issue that could give Stewart a lot to work with dramatically.

I just hope they don't make the series as depressing as Logan in which Patrick Stewart also had a role.

That is what I also am afraid of, I hope we are both wrong

I hope you’re both right, as a Logan-like story for Picard is by far the most interesting possible version of the series that I’ve read or heard.

As long as Jean-Luc is married to Beverly and Wil Wheaton has to call him "Dad" even though he would be a Step-Dad; I'll be happy. Maybe even add in a recent StarFleet Graduate as a son between Beverly and Jean-Luc while Wil Wheaton is a Lt Cmdr on some ship.

:barf::barf::barf:

If this is even remotely close to the series, I will have found the first Trek (series or movie) with which I will not bother.

One thing that won’t happen though, is me spending time in the Picard forum constantly lamenting how bad it is. I’m sure it’ll have plenty of fans even if it has no appeal to me and it would be arrogant presumption on my part to rain on their parade.

Picard was always on the grumpy side of life but he was never miserable.

I will watch the show but it will be hard for the writers to convince me of picards depression.

We are speaking about a person who experienced everything a human beeing could ask for in his life.

- Becoming the captain of starfleets flagship
- Making first contact with dozens of spezies
- Defeating the quadrants worst enemies
- Witnessing the beginning of life on earth
- Time travel
- Living another happy life (Inner Light, Nexus)
....

Seriously, we are speaking about the probably most enlightened human beeing who has ever lived and yet he becomes miserable/lost/depressed in his late years. That is going to be a stretch...

No it isn't going to be a stretch because what your describing isn't how humans work. People can have everything and achieve amazing things and still be brought down by life's challenges. Picard is set 20 years after Nemesis, a lot of bad things can happen to man in that amount of time.

The show could just be about Picard struggling with some issue, which while a terrible situation brings out the best in him. You know, showing him as a human being who has doubts but manages to still live by his beliefs and principles.

I wonder if they could do something like have an action Picard made in the past that seemed like a good idea at the time, now be causing problems in the present. That could lead to him having some doubts about things and also determined to put things right.

It will be interesting to see if they can tell an interesting story that doesn't fundamentally change who the character is.

Agreed. Logan was horribly depressing. Hopefully this series is nothing like that and has a lot of Star Trek optimism in it.

It’ll be very different than Discovery
That quote alone will get me to watch the first few episodes.

I'm sure he'll come back at some point, he did want to be in StarFleet
Wesley wanted to be a Starfleet officer when he was a child, that changed as a young adult. Having Wesley appear (literally) in one or two episodes as a traveler would be interesting.

Oh yes pleae, but spoken word Shatner style...
Or just get Shatner to do it.

I hope the first full trailer they show is accompanied by Johnny Cash's Hurt.
One of the few covers that truly (IMHO) outdid the original version -- although the original was great as well.

Trent Reznor said he had tears and goosebumps upon first hearing Johnny Cash's cover, and felt Cash's version was so powerful that it was not longer Reznor's song.

Depression is nothing to be "convinced" of and has nothing to do with any successes in life. A real depression is caused by chemical inbalances in the brain.

Yes, well we are in the 24th century, so we can expect them to be able to correct chemical imbalances in the brain by medecine (just like we already do now) unless the cause either isnt chemical imbalances in the brain or some unknown disease.

I know since it's a deleted scene from Nemesis it's not canon, but by that time Wesley is an officer again and about to start serving on the Titan.
