Brie Larson was my favorite part of Captain Marvel.

So I'm dumbfounded to read about recasting petitions today. The whole idea seems more than a little pathetic, for a studio no doubt having poured concrete around said casting. But the criticism I read about Brie's handling of the character was the opposite of my reaction, I found the portrayal she gave completely matched her character. The observations she 'looked bored' or that she 'phoned in' her performance don't hold up - not every character has to be loudly chanting, swinging their arms, chugging beer etc at all times to be perceived as genuine.

Having seen Captain Marvel with no expectations going in, I loved the interpretation of her character. Hope to see more Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in the future.

I'm sure there's a Captain Marvel 2 script being worked on with her heading out to deal with the larger galaxies reaction to the reverse-snap.

It's easy to miss, but wasn't Tazerface shown to be sharing his bed with another dude? *does a quick youtube search* Yup! Granted this needn't be any indication of his sexuality, but it could, so why not? Also: those lyrics...just a tad suggestive, no?

I was kind of hoping the Captain Marvel sequel would deal with what she was up to for 20 years.

Having watched it I think it's a far better film than some of the harsher reviews which placed it alongside Thor: The Dark World and 2008's Incredible Hulk when it is easily as good as Spider-Man: Homecoming or Guardian's of the Galaxy in the MCU.

The opening shot on the Kree home world was I thought reminiscent of Blade Runner and it did a good job of reconstructing the 1990s era. The Skrulls were comics accurate, although one of them having an Australian accent seemed a bit incongruous.

I feel the Skrulls should really have been saved for an Avengers film but with Captain Marvel portraying them in a sympathetic light a 'Secret Invasion' type story line is no longer an option.

Some minor criticisms would be revealing Nick Fury's eye injury being a the result of a cat scratch rather than from a battle as many probably thought which was a letdown. How did a Quinjet manage to achieve escape velocity to get into space and survive leaving the Earth's atmosphere? How did someone as young as Monica Rambeau still remember Carole Danvers in detail despite her being gone for 6 years? Why did Come as You Are by Nirvana play in Carole's Supreme Intelligence vision despite the song being released in 1992, three years after she left Earth meaning she would have no knowledge of it?

All petty I know, but still.....

I'd have to watch it again before I'd feel comfortable passing final judgment but it seemed to me rather generic. It wasn't bad per se but after so many superhero movies it seemed like another cog in the machine without having a whole lot to add. Brie Larson was OK but I didn't feel she necessarily made it her own where I couldn't imagine someone else in the role (IMO). Again not bad, but perhaps just felt a bit perfunctory if that makes sense. Doctor Strange is another one that left me cold but I've only seen that the one time as well, I usually give them another shot before dismissing.

Have you seen some of the youtube videos trying to analyze her interviews to show that she's cold and her co-stars hate her? There was talk of toxic fans in the Avengers thread and I'm sure that's probably the motivation here though the way the videos are edited and the sheer amount of effort to make her look bad I do find amusing in a perverse way. I think Brie is a little awkward, maybe introverted, and that is being exploited.

So are we labelling Tazerface gay because him and some other male were passed out drunk on a bed?

Why does this stuff even matter omg can we please just enjoy the movie

I think Brie was directed poorly and I agree that she's an introvert and not great at public speaking, there's been a lot of drama around her and she's human.. it has to get to her and have her maybe thinking about what she's going to say, making her more awkward.

I thought the movie was good and Brie wasn't "as bad" as I'd heard but she was a bit stiff, it's hard to explain but when paired with Sam Jackson giving a masterclass it exposed her a bit.

I hope for the sequel they direct her better

Sure it is. There's 30 years between CM and Endgame, the skrulls in this movie are just one small part of the skrull diaspora and this movie already establishes the search for a new homeworld as the skrull's driving force (which was their entire motivation in secret invasion).
 
I know this is off topic but I enjoyed Captain Marvel so much I watched The Unicorn Store. That was good, too.
