News Kurtzman confirms more new shows will be announced

“The fact that the streaming world has eliminated the lines between movies and television allows for big universes like ‘Star Trek’ to thrive in a way they really couldn’t have before,” says franchise honcho Alex Kurtzman, an executive producer of “Star Trek: Discovery.”

That CBS All Access show has weathered some turmoil (at least five reported changes in its showrunning teams) and is set to explore new ground in Season 3. Meanwhile, Kurtzman is overseeing an unprecedented expansion of the “Trek” TV universe, while two films are in some stage of development. It’s a far cry from the franchise’s past presence in film and TV.

An animated “Trek” series by Kevin and Dan Hageman (“Trollhunters”) is in development for Nickelodeon. Kurtzman promises it’s nothing like the cartoon series of the 1970s: “I can’t reveal details on that one, but it’s something that has never been done before in ‘Star Trek.’ ”

Another animated series, “Lower Decks,” is coming to All Access from Mike McMahan, a writer of the irreverent Adult Swim series “Rick and Morty.” Kurtzman reassures, “It’s a total love letter to ‘Star Trek’; there’s no mockery.”

Two untitled live-action series have also been announced for All Access. One continues the story of franchise favorite Jean-Luc Picard (with Patrick Stewart returning in the role) and one follows the mysterious organization Section 31, featuring Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). Georgiou is a “Discovery” character who died in its first episodes, only to return — sort of — as her less-nice self, a scheming empress from the franchise’s Mirror Universe (introduced in an “Original Series” episode).

And Kurtzman says there are still others in development that have not yet been announced.​

So what will they announce next?

 

So there are going to be 5 series more or less running at the same time? Seems like too much, too fast.

 

That's the thing, they WON'T be 'premiered' at the same time (at least the CBSAA ones) - they'll be released on a schedule that (mostly likely) will encompass a full calendar year - IE There'll be constant 'new' episodes of something Star Trek year round on CBS so Star Trek fans maintain said subscription year round to catch it all when premiered.

 

As @Noname Given says, they won't air at the same time. It also relieves the pressure a bit from each individual series. I think from next year there will be up to 2 years wait between seasons, giving each show more production time and not over saturating the market.

 

Hopefully a live action series set a hundred years after TNG that follows the adventures of a Starfleet crew.

The animated series don't interest me. The Nickelodeon series is about "lawless teens" which doesn't sound very Star Trek and neither does Section 31 which will probably just be another prequel.

 

Wake me when they launch a new series that is run by someone other than Kurtzman.

 

This makes me excited. Glad they have one person directing it all and allowing for the franchise to grow!

especially as I'm not excited about the Picard , Section 31 shows or Discovery's run so far.
also think they'll have some "new" Trek on all the time to have less "pausing" All Access subscribers as they call them.

 

Well we unofficially know about Starfleet Academy created by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz and possibly a Khan mini series that may-or-may-not be by Nick Meyer

 

They also have a long plan. Picard may run 3 years. I suspect that they are considering options for a show to fill that gap. S31 wont film until after S3 of DSC which would put it somewhere earlyish next year. Perhaps that too is a limited show.

I am still hoping for some shows with a different format. Something like Sherlock or a miniseries.

Pretty sure Khan died when Meyer left. But Starfleet Academy is the one I'm itching for.

 

Just make sure they get plenty of sunshine and water.

 

I think Meyer has mentioned in various interviews and lectures he's given that the Khan mini-series is a little wrangled at the moment between CBS and Paramount because it uses elements established in The Wrath of Khan -- which is more Paramount's area than CBS's. I may be misremembering or misunderstanding.

 

Let's wake him when it's Rick Berman.

 

Looks like that Captain Sulu series is finally going to happen! Only they waited so long it's not even going to be original Sulu but Kelvinverse Sulu. Which is interesting because CBS now has "Twilight Zone" and they can do a story where Takei finds out his long wish for a Captian Sulu has come true but TWIST he won't be the star. Fade to do,do,do,do music.

TOS fans had to put up with Berman & Braga dissing the TOS era for 18 years.

 

I can't imagine a Star Trek animated show that I'd like.

I don't say it's impossible, but I can't think of an example of that sort of show that I do like.

The exact idea that has been binned due to zero viewer interest each of the many times it was pitched since the end of the TOS movies...

 

I think at this point the Kelvin timeline is more likely to continue on TV in some shape or form than in a movie, so who knows...

 

I kind of feel like some of the unannounced projects in development could potentially be replacements for DSC and Picard, and not intended to run concurrently. DSC could potentially be on it's 4th or 5th season by the time any of the currently-unannounced projects are ready to go, and Stewart himself says Picard could go for 3 seasons. Don't get me wrong, I'm very pro-DSC, but it's an expensive show, and serialized TV doesn't have quite have the lifespan that episodic/procedural TV does. It might be more cost-efficient to just cycle new shows in every 3 or 4 years, and wrap up the current ones before they get stale. We all can name a couple of serialized shows that went on maybe one or two seasons too long.

Of course, I say all of that, and DSC will go on for ten years.
