I think much like TOS, it is outgrowing its original foundation.
Hey, I've encountered fans of the Orville who on one hand claim its the 'true spirit of Star Trek' then defend immoral, unethical, intolerant and downright criminally stupid behavior committed by characters in the show which offers zero repercussions and even ultimately tacit approval by the end of the episode they occured in. Odd really, at least to me.
Seriously, the attitude Orville fans have might've had a hand in my not being so enthusiastic to come back for Season 2.
It reminds me of a Star Trek series that's not my favorite (TOS), my second favorite (DSC), or even my third favorite (DS9). Hell, I'll defend VOY, whereas TNG is notoriously my Whipping Boy, so I'd even say VOY is really my fourth favorite Trek series and TNG is my fifth. Ouch. And it's done by a guy whose shows I was never into, even back in college in the early-2000s. And then, to top it all off, more vocal elements of their fanbase go out of their way to say "STD sucks!" whenever they can, even though I don't have the same issue with The Orville that they seem to have with Star Trek: Discovery.
Ironically, one of my best friends IRL likes The Orville better than Discovery. But we have other stuff to talk about besides TV.
"Why'd you put TOS back over DSC?" you might ask. Because the shake-up to Discovery at the end of the second season was so drastic the jury's now out on the rest of the series. I have no idea what I'll think of this change until I see it. Jumping 950 years into the future is exciting but also a pretty major thing to do. Hopefully it pays off.

Yeah, I've rarely heard a fan of the Orville on a Disco review site defend similar acts which take place on Discovery. Quite the reverse.
I'd be perfectly happy with a full series. Orvillies will need something to watch and enjoy.
Mount seemed hesitant to commit to a full series.
Some of these threads have taught me so much about being stuck in a time loop of repeat debates, I feel like I've got such a better handle on ST temporal mechanics in the process. They've brought clarity to the chaos of being exposed to endless time which my logic was unable to comprehend. Thanks all!
Just change the name of the series and who's on which side, and it becomes even more clear how similar everything is. Except the intensity. I now have a new answer for "Which Star Trek series do you think is or was the most polarizing?" and it hasn't even gone into production yet.

Definitely not a show that competes well on a dramatic level with modern TV.
Yup. Orville has not gotten me enthusiastic this season, and 3 episodes in there was not a thing that drew me along. Largely it became a bit mean spirited at times and I decided that I didn't need that. Then I was told it was brilliant and that pretty much pushed me away further. I won't call DSC brilliant but it at least engages.
Well, with the exception of some moments that looked like scenes from 'The View', A Happy Refrain did leave me with most of what I felt at the end of Calypso, so there was that. That may be the one episode definitely worth watching, IMO, for its giddy embrace of classic romcom conventions. It helps that it has little to do with the Ed-Kelly dynamic the show is otherwise built around.

IMO, Its only a tier below the likes of Black Sails, Legion, 12 Monkeys or Man in the High Castle, so it rates reasonably high in my books. And I see it as a tier above the best Trek-like shows of recent vintage (Killjoys, The Last Ship), so that another nod in its favor.
And if they did a new version of TOS after the Pike Series, Peck is looking at the possibility of committing to two series back-to-back (unless they recast). He'd be guaranteed a decade of steady employment but a lot less opportunity to play other roles. He'd have to weigh his options even more than Anson Mount.
Ethan Peck would basically become the new Micheal Dorn.
Well, it would only be 13 episode seasons, so he'd still be able to do a movie or two or even a different show as they do in the U.K. If Michelle Yeoh can do it, I'm sure he could manage.
I don't know why people fight over Disco vs. Orville. They're two different critters.
Disco is a bit darker than the Orville, which at times, veers into comedy. It's a fun show. It doesn't pretend to be anything that it isn't. It's not putting up displays looking for Emmy Nominations.
I don't really care if it's an imitation of TNG. I like most of the characters while on TNG, I really only liked Data and occasionally Picard.
As for Disco, I like it. It has flaws, to be sure, but it entertains. And at the end of the day, if I'm watching TV, it's either to learn (documentaries and such) or be entertained. Both Disco and Orville fill the bill. I just have to suspend my disbelief but when you think about it, most of Star Trek is not something that could or even would happen. It's just a TV show meant to attract people who will hopefully buy advertisers' shit. That's all. If they entertain me in the meanwhile, it's a fair trade, especially since I pay to avoid commercials or else mute them.
