News Mount And Peck Are Open To Reprising Pike And Spock

If you slapped "Star Trek" on The Orville and removed the Trek components from Discovery, the shows would likely be in the exact opposite positions they are now. Never underestimate the power of branding.

Oh no. The Orville can get away with being a silly throwback with recycled plots because it's a comedy.

Any new Trek drama would get lambasted for being stuck in the past.

I would posit, however, that The Orville is not a comedy. Its plots, as being recycled TNG stories, actually have quite serious plots. Compare this to, say, Red Dwarf, which is actually a comedy. The Orville is TNG with jokes scrawled into the margins. And they've gone to highlight this by all the alumni they've hired to make the show in serious positions and roles order to give it the appearance of a stamp of approval. And this season they dropped the comedy almost completely.

Lets be fair, any and all new Star Trek is going to be lambasted by one faction of fandom or another. And it the Orville doesn't just gets away with what it is doing because it reminds folks of TNG very strongly, has lots of their old friends and all the musical cues and visuals they remember and its also on not on a streaming network and its also not trying anything new or different with the old formula many are so attached to as their definition of Star Trek, it is put up on a pedestal for that and venerated.

If I had a nickel for the times I've seen it described as being the 'true spirit' of Star Trek in some manner I'd certainly have a pretty massive 4K TV by now.

And its the people, IMO, who want a Pike series above all else, because they hope it will be a reversion to the old style of Trek storytelling and visual/musical language they are most fond of.

It's marketed as a comedy.

This is a comedy trailer.

I've seen it also called a comedy-drama, which works too. It still isn't a serious drama. A serious, modern Trek drama couldn't get away with what the Orville gets away with.

And the thing is, it's not going to be like that. So they're setting themselves for a massive disappointment. They want to dive in head-first with their excitement but will end up belly-flopping instead. And the faster they hit the water, the harder the impact will be.

Well, I'm a guy who thought Angel was the funniest thing on TV when it was on the air. Marketing means nothing to me. IMO, something has to be written like a comedy to be a comedy. AFAIC, overall, the Orville is generally a serious scifi show with occasional gag scenes thrown in and not well integrated, which is an interesting failure there, because there are a number of scifi series from the 80s which did a good job at that, such as the first seasons of Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica as well as early 90s shows like Space Rangers and Babylon 5. The Orville's humor has felt mostly jarring, tacked on and out of place to me.

It's going to be a long wait for more Trek. :wah:

The levels of toot exchange may threaten the very existence of this forum and possibly the world.

We should get the Short Treks soon hopefully.

The Orville isn't a comedy it just doesn't take itself too seriously.

And you'd think the Usual Suspects would go into Quiet Mode. And they were good while Pike was around. Or as good as they can be. But now that he's off the show, it's back to their old tricks. Only difference is: I see right through it now. Too bad others are still indulging all this nonsense.

From my experience with Orville fans, people will disregard a whole lot if they get to see color coded uniforms and beige sets that are brightly lit.

It does take Seth's relationship problems pretty seriously, though. I mean, the whole survival of civilization by the end of season two revolves around them.

Yeah some of the subject matter doesn't really scream comedy to me, especially as of late.

It just doesn't take itself too seriously at times, not all the time though like a comedy would.
