But if they used the Bifrost, would that not mean that Heimdall would be aware of future Thor's existence? I thought someone has to be on the Asgard end of the Bifrost for it to work...they used the bifrost

I'm with you. Both Bucky and Falcon have worn the shield in the comics at various times, but from a movie perspective I'd have thought Bucky was the obvious choice. He's got the super serum, which Sam doesn't, while Sam already has the Falcon costume, which allows him to fly. Why downgrade to an earthbound, ordinary strength identity?
Quick question (and apologies, but I have not siphoned through all the pages of commentary in this thread) - how did Rocket and Thor get to Asgard in the past. I understand the movie's mechanism for time travel, but they jumped from Earth, so how did they then get to the Asgard of the past. All the others traveling off world had ships and such. Is this just an unexplained plot hole or did I miss something?
how did Steve return the soul stonePresumably, they just exited the quantum realm in Asgard. The other group used a ship because there were two stones in that year. The all arrived on Morag, then Rhody and Nebula stayed behind with a pod while Nat & Clint took off for Vormir.

I might have misunderstood that scene but it seemed implied that he'd had something to increase his strength and invulnerability. Probably not the exact serum that Steve Rogers had, but Zola had clearly progressed along the way to some sort of serum, with Red Skull being an early, partly successful trial. Certainly the scene in Civil War seemed to show him running faster than would seem likely for an unenhanced human. And its unlikely that just a cybernetic arm could provide significant enhanced strength without enhancements to the rest of his muscular and skeletal systems (although as it's a comic book movie its also possible that I should just ignore that sort of biological reality - certainly Tony Stark didn't get brain damage when smashing into a wall in his first movie, which definitely should have happened). When does he get the Super-serum? He gets experimented on and given an cybernetic arm but i don't remember them saying or showing that.

love the nod to Star Trek 6
The question is rather whether they'll take one of the options on the table... depends on whether the franchise'll continue to thrive and whether they'll convince the actors to return.
... and whether they want to ruin the message that sometimes sacrifices are necessary and death actually means death (since we're on a Trek-board... *g*).
As for Black Widow, the "rules" of the Soul Stone are that when you get sacrificed/kill yourself for it, you stay dead and it's only by doing something like getting an alternate timeline version of yourself to take your place that you can live again. But the original Prime Timeline version is dead for good.
It's also goes on without a Thanos and his legions, so that universe came out on top of that bargain because no snap at all. On the down side, Ronan is still alive and the power stone is still in place, so who knows how that all shakes out.I doubt you have to kill someone to return the Soul Stone--only to get it.
Here's the thing though--past Gamorrah is in 2023, and living her life. Apparently, that does not violate their rules of time travel. I guess she is now in an alternate timeline from her perspective and the timeline she left goes on without a Gamorrah.
That's basically kidnapping. I mean imagine for a second if an alternate timeline Tony showed up and grabbed Pepper because his Pepper got snapped or something. It's creepy. So my question is, couldn't they do the same thing with Tony and Black Widow? They just go back in time to right before the battle, grab Tony and Natasha, and stick them in the present.
Boom--they are back.
