Cringe Trek

Wait....she wears a wig??!!

This is partly a political issue - many African-american women routinely wear wigs - and for actresses it's partly down to pressure from studios:

It was a familiar dilemma for Viola Davis. What to do with her hair?

The star of the upcoming film “Widows” needed to know what kind of wig or extensions she should wear to play Veronica Rawlins, the leader of an unlikely band of robbers scrambling to pull off a dangerous heist. Director Steve McQueen’s answer shocked the Emmy-, Tony- and Oscar-winning actress. “I said, ‘Your own hair is beautiful — just wear it that way,’” recalls McQueen. “Veronica is a wash-and-go kind of girl.” For Davis, the decision to appear on-screen in close-cropped, curly hair was liberating and represented an important social statement.

“You’re always taught as a person of color to not like your hair,” she says. “The kinkier it is, the so-called nappier it is, the uglier it is.”

Love Instructors -- I never read the TMP novel, but word has it that it has a ton of cringe.

I believe it has the distinction of the only book to mention the contents of Kirk's pants.

Sulu-- "Stop or I'll shoot! I don't want to have to kill a woman!!!" That Which Survives

Kirk-- "Her life could have been as rich as any woman's, if only. If only." Turnabout Intruder

Men wearing skirts in the first season of TNG.

You have NO idea... :barf:

As a love instructor myself, I take personal offense

most fight scenes without Michelle Yeoh
Any fight scene in Star Trek without Michelle Yeoh. My headcanon has Prime!Georgiou being a fighter, too.

Kirk'sJunk...I can't believe no one has taken that username.
TMP novelization. I remember my thirteen-year-old self going "WTF did I just read?"

What a strange thing to get annoyed over. Impractically exposing leg skin is only for female Starfleet officers?
Shouldn't be for anyone in uniform.

I didn't say I was annoyed: I thought it was a cringe. Hell, even the producers cringed enough to get rid of it after a few episodes.
Can you imagine them fighting Jem
Hadar or Klingons in that?

You didn't say "Starfleet officers." You said "men," so this argument doesn't make sense.

OK, I meant male Starfleet officers wearing those skirts that they wore in the first few episodes of the first season of TNG. It was just a little cringe to me.

I could see where Roddenberry might have been going with it, and when they abandoned the idea, there was cringe in it.

If they could have found a better skirt, I might reconsider. Otherwise it's the cosmic cheerleader thing. Which was a cringe.

Who said it was? The skirts for women were abandoned almost at the same time. They're free to bring back the skirt for men and women if they want, just like in the 09 movie, at least for women.

Thanks for the reply! I lived in Lake Orion, MI for a while, and they were all very sensitive to that kind of thing. You may be on to something. As a philologist, I think the difference between denotation and denotation is really interesting.
Yes, but we’re they more sensitive to correctly pronouncing “Orion”?
You have NO idea... :barf:
That “love instructor” reference came after Kirk used a colorful metaphor he learned from his grandfather, right? #TwoFerCringe

I never noticed her hair looking out of place. I must find a way to connect my streaming service to a microscope.
15 seasons of Drag Race trained me for this kind of thing :p
The idea of time cops is somewhat cringe worthy, but not as cringe worthy as hair police. She always looks terrific.
I prefer wig police thankyouverymuch!
Gersha Phillips wants to.
The skirt/leggings/boot combo looked great on Lt. Amin(?). I hope she still has a chance to play with the design now that Disco jumped out of the era.
The baseball episode of Deep Space Nine.
Death to the opposition those who hate on Take Me Out to the Holosuite!
