Which was a point I made in another discussion. I was talked down and the response was it was necessary to reboot/set in the TOS era all of these new Trek's (DISCO, JJ-Prize) because it appeals to the casual viewer. If DISCO would have been set in some future time, it would have not appealed to the casual viewer and never succeeded.

Guess what - DISCO Season 3 is 950 years into Trek's future! What happened? Is the casual viewer going to understand? Were 2 seasons in the TOS era enough for any casual viewer to understand the leap? Isn't that the opposite of what a casual viewer is? Does DISCO season 3 not need casual viewers? Does Trek now no longer need casual viewers?

    Which is it?

I wish they would have set DISCO 950 years in the future to begin with. What's past is literally prologue now. New viewers could start with Season 3 and, in theory, not be lost at all.

It's like they are making this stuff up as they go along.

Waited decades for serialized Trek and they still can't seem to do a decent job. Moments of brilliance, yes. Cohesive whole from start to finish? No.

I think they are doing a great job keeping Trek alive in today’s climate, here’s to season 3.

Far too many folk trying to redirect Trek to where they want it to go (i.e back to how it was in 1998) I worry the more the studios listen to the most vocal ‘fans’, the more likely Trek will get scrapped.

Most of them started with them on a mission of exploration. The first Captain's log described that in most episodes. What happened afterwards is a different thing, but they mostly started on explorarory missions.

Studios don’t listen to fans. Never had never will. They listen to bean counters who will tell them what will generate more money. These bean counters told them initially that they needed to do a prequel to generate most money possible. Now same bean counters are telling them to go the future to generate most money. Are bean counters idiots? More likely yes than no. Are studios going to stop listening to them? Also, no.

When it's our millions of dollars to spend then I'll expect them to listen to us.

I randomly had a look at season 4 and out of the first 15 episodes only three start with a mission of exploration.
