Proportional cast representation for season 3

I don't understand the word "representation" in these contexts. People are people. It's studio execs that try to shove this idea down my throat.
It's not. The idea has rather been shoved down theirs.

"I don't see *characteristic*, people are just people" is a deeply inadequate response to the issue as it does not actually address the problem, and denies the reality of those who rarely see themselves represented in media. There are some great resources out there, as an example, from queer women about their experience seeing Willow's coming out story on Buffy, and the representation that gave them on network television when that just was not happening. Representation really matters.

Casting "just people" led to the establishment of white straight dudes as the default character, and we are only just beginning to sort that out. Discovery makes missteps like the Bury Your Gays story, but it's done fairly well.

Good points. My apologies if I came off negatively or dismissive. I watch to be entertained by good characters and good stories.

This kind of thread is just fodder for shitheads, and honestly, it served its purpose fast.

but fine, I'll answer:

Star Trek can never give a real representation of what ethnic groups would look like in 300 years. Or rather, it could but it might be dificult and it might not appeal. My predicion, is if you have a more progressive civilization that an zip from star to star in a matter of days or hours, excepting a few isolationist groups (interestingly, Owo's family, for instance) you're probably going to see a far more homogenized human species, the real outliers being those rare people like Spock who are hybrids.

All Brazillian cast anyone?

Conversely, Trek has never really handled post-humanism very well. It did as well as it could, and it is a bit locked in a part now. I would imagine in 300 years people would adopt and replace designer bodies as they wish. Want to look like Nefertiti or Erik the Red this year? Go for it. Planning to spend some time on tax holiday as a ice-mermaid in the seas of Europa.. ok, see you later. Trek can't go there because, well, that's not Trek. That's fine.

heterosexual, homosexual duality let alone identity might be thought of as a strange quaint obsession of a certain time period caused by a variety of factors and defensive postures.

So quit fucking worrying about representation, OP (EDITED TO ADD THAT. HAPPY?). You'll get someone like you on the show eventually. You certainly have in the past.

Picard actually got the designer body of beloved 20th/21st century actor Patrick Stewart, it was a huge plot point.

I take it you were addressing the op with the quote Kemaiku quoted?
I guess it's fine for people who have it everywhere to tell people who don't have any what to worry about.
Yeah. sorry I should have just shaken a tamborine and yelled shame at the OP. When identiy is involved we must all scrape our scalps with abalone shells and yell to the gods for vengeance.

Yes, i thought it was a stupid thread, a hate baiting thread and my reply was to him, but apparently i was't as overt about it as need be. Jesus

To be fair, with your talk of a homogenized human species the final paragraph can easily be read as a statement towards people who care about representation in general, not just people like the op who think that there aren't enough white men on the show, but also those like @Kemaiku and me who've never been represented on-screen. Hence my asking for clarification. FWIW I mostly agree with your previous post.

It’s fine for someone to tell a straight white male not to worry about it—which is the point of the post as a whole. Snipping a tiny bit, out of context, to make his point the opposite of what it actually is, however, is not fine at all.
thank you. I owe you a jipper, sans beach.

That's how I read it, given how often it's posted by entirely too many people especially now.
