Long weekend? Does everyone else get one? I certainly don't Granted, I get a ton of other holidays at my current job, so I'm not really complaining. My previous job running a restaurant basically meant I worked every holiday except Christmas and Thanksgiving so I'm pretty damn thankful.
The spacesuit suitup room is gonna require some interesting choices, especially given that in the deleted Kirk suitup scene we see that behind the door is the lift control and signage that would connect to one of the exits like the one they use to exit out onto the hull. That there's no circular airlock door in that set suggests to me the intent wasn't for that room to connect to the hatch we see Kirk exit from. As I recall, all that spacewalk stuff was shot in post-production and possibly they changed their minds about from where they would exit. Of course, since we only see one end of that set, I suppose you could put the circular airlock "behind" the camera, I'll try to remember to ask Andy Probert about this and if he has any recollections.
Here's some test shots before I put the finishing touches on it tomorrow and call it done for now. I spent the day programming the self-illumination system and rigged it so that all emissives and lights can turn off on demand. I still have to program the blinking running lights but that's really it. Let me know if you guys see anything egregious so I can fix it before my final renders tomorrow. Oh, I accidentally left off the engineering hull's aft and bottom phaser emitters for these renders but will get those added in tomorrow. Now that I’m looking at these, I’ve noticed I’ve moved the nacelle grille glow too far into the purple range. Will correct this tomorrow as well.
Hi Donny once you get the lighting corrected would it be possible to get some ortho views also ? Thank you so much for sharing this
I'm flabbergasted by all your work, Donny; well done! Any chance of seeing your TOS and TMP Enterprises flying side by side? I'm very curious to see how they'd look together - assuming our expectations of the lighting for each ship don't clash too much.
I'm sure you can find some TMP era materials that look that purple. It didn't look out of sorts to me at all. Fantastic work.
Absolutely gorgeous 1701, Donny. Thanks so much! I've always wanted clean, high-resolution shots of the TMP Enterprise, and these do nicely. I certainly wouldn't object to more....
It looks like Unreal has finally made improvements to it's lighting in orthorgraphic views, so yes! I should also use the opportunity to go back and take some shots of my TOS Enterprise as well. This will take a little bit of work, since the TOS Enterprise is currently at a different scale. Resizing the model is no problem, but I'd have to manually re-configure the lights built into the model since lights can't just be uniformally scaled with the model. But it should be short work and I'd love to take some shots like with both beauties. More are coming! These were just final proofs before I do the last batch of beauty shots.
Looks beautify @Donny! This is super minor but on the nacelle is there white light spilling over from the outside angled bracket to the inside bracket? From the rear angles there is an additional white light glow coming from ahead of the nacelle grille glow.
Ok, ok. These STILL aren't the final shots, but I got the blinking running lights programmed and also added a small mock-up of the botanical garden so there's something in there until I get the full-size set built. I won't show it up-close because it looks like poo when you get right up to it The running lights really make this model feel complete. Ok! I'm not doing any more modifications. I'm going to watch GoT for now and I'll take the final showcase screencaps tomorrow night! I think I have to! You really can't appreciate the beauty of it until you see the light bouncing off the Aztec panels in motion. And the blinking running lights just make it feel more alive! It's there, I probably just have it too subtle. I'll make it more apparent tomorrow.
They look fantastic. Curious how you intend to handle things like going to warp, phaser fire, and photon torpedoes.
I was about to nitpick the under saucer navigation lights being red and green rather than white but I thought I'd better check the movie first. And sure enough the under saucer lights are red and green there. That makes the TOS Enterprise the odd man out.
I don’t know how deep I’m going to get with any of those things. My intention with this project is to make it more of an interactive museum piece rather than a starship flight simulator. Since the focus is the exploration of the interior of the Enterprise, the exterior really just serves as supporting the immersion. I’d still like to do an exterior tour via travel pod as well, but showing the ship in combat or going to warp isn’t really part of the plan.
