How has Star Trek impacted your life?

My wife and a number of my friends are longtime fans of all things Trek and, having recently become disenchanted with another site on a totally different subject, I have begun a crash course in Trek-dom. I am watching episodes in TOS, TNG and Voyager every day and finding them entertaining, if occasionally "soapy." Wrath Of Kahn is my favorite among the movies and I hope to become, with everyone's help, conversant in Trek lore over time. As a retired engineer, I have always been interested in the scientific/technical aspects of Star Trek and other science fiction "universes." Some day I hope to be able to participate more intelligently with everyone
That was really cool. What year was that? Nothing like the cons we have today. Times have changed....I'm not sure if Shatner could ever make an appearance at a con today and have a bunch of fans casually escort him to the stage like that. He's usually got some security or bodyguards walking him from his hotel room to the stage.
There was a real pureness there...no corporate sponsors, no cosplayers, and no vendors lined up the wazoo trying to sell you something. When these Trek cons are not about money, all that's left is the love of Trek.
When life goes to shit, when people I love decide they're better off without me, when friends ghost me, when work drags me down, when the news breaks my heart there's always Star Trek. A weird fantasy world of starships and aliens which I've grown up with and know more about than any real life subject. It's my safe space.
It's also led to friendships, relationships and adventures halfway around the world.

Well, someone has finally explained to me why I've never had much luck with women. None have them have been Star Trek fans, and I didn't realize I should have been looking for one.When I was in high school, there was this one girl I liked. I heard from a friend that she also enjoyed Trek so I loaned here the series of James Blish adaptations.
As of next month, we will have been married 41 years.

Star Trek kept me company through my anxiety riddled teenage years / early 20's showing that the world can be better.
In work it gives me role models in leadership and management, when leading my team i will often think how would Picard or Janeway work on this.

My crush on Riker (2nd season on, obviously) made me realize I was gay. I guess that impacted my life in that I never stopped being into bearded burly men, but who isn't?

Star Trek introduced the idea that people from different races/cultures/species could work together (or at least try with success at times), so when I began watching the show as a child it helped give me a more open mind when dealing with other people. When I was in high school, I joined the AFS club which was designed to help foreign exchange students make friends with Americans and become more acclimated to our culture. Although I couldn't afford to travel abroad as a student, myself, I enjoyed interacting with the people I met during those meetings.
I've been depressed lately about the current state of affairs because it seems like there is more hostility now between races/cultures than there was during the late 90s, but this could just be the rose-colored glasses of youth and me spending too much time on the Internet where tiny but loud groups of people can spread their propaganda easily through social media. I've been binging on Star Trek for the past few months, however, and it's cheered me up a great deal.

Star Trek has informed one of my favorite sub genres of Science fiction: crew-on-starship having adventures. I very much prefer the unabashed adventurism of the original series to Next Gen's more contemplative approach. Someday I'd like to write stories of my own in that same mold of starship, crew, adventures.
Nothing does it quite as well and as satisfying as Star Trek.

Star Trek opened my mind to the vast wonders of the universe. Seriously. I know it sounds super cliche and eye-roll-worthy, but it's true. I grew up, and still live, in a part of America where those sorts of things just aren't valued. I didn't even realize there were planets orbiting other stars until I started watching The Next Generation as kid (let alone that those stars were actually suns just like ours... or similar to ours). I thought there was just our sun, the other 7 planets (8 at the time, poor Pluto), some asteroids, and that's it. I'd like to think I would have eventually caught on even without Star Trek, but I have acquaintances, ADULTS, that STILL think it's just Earth and the solar system and that's it.

3.)Filled my parents' attic with merchandise purchased in the 1990s
