Spoilers Supernatural season 14

I quit watching some time ago but still it's the end of an era and after so long it feels weird to hear it's coming to a close.

Any word on why? Did CW decide to end it or did others involved feel they wanted to move on?

 

The actors decided to end the show. If they wanted to keep going then CW would have too.

 

I'm hoping they rest it five years or so then start talking motion pictures or mini-series. Would be a great draw for WB's streaming services.

 

Well, that was an interesting episode. The main story was a standard "case" based on American folklore, which is fine-- I'm happy that they still do stories like that, because that's why I started watching the show all those years ago.

But the Jack story was interesting. He got to be a kid and make a typical kid mistake, trying to impress the other kids by showing off. But he learned his lesson, apparently, which kind of contradicts the theory that he has been possessed or corrupted by Michael. We'll see....

I'm glad they brought back those kids from the Papa Winchester episode. They kind of struck as potential next-generation Hunters. I wonder if they will play any part in the Final Season.

 

Speculation: if Cas is trying to get back in touch with God/Chuck, that suggests the heaven storyline is back on the front page. They've been on the brink of extinction for two seasons in a row now, and I'm guessing Cas is reaching out to his father because they're out of time and there are no other options.

A leaked set photo seems to suggest Rob Benedict will indeed be back, so with any luck when he does show up, he'll rescue Adam/Michael from the cage, fix Heaven, and then give the angels back their wings, promise to bring back the archangels...and then, very probably, season 15 will drop the Heaven storyline altogether. I'm half-expecting the final season to harken back to the first season, more about hunting and less about Heaven.

If the season had more time left I'd be expecting a showdown between Chuck and the Shadow, with Chuck forcing the Empty to give back all his children. It seems like we have the setup for it, but...with only three shows left, I rather doubt it.

 

I'm so glad we're back on tonight! It looks like Nick is back, possibly after Donatello? Mary will be there, possibly to give motherly advice to Jack, and Cas tracks down "Sister Jo."

 

Dean playing "Mousetrap." That alone makes this episode worth seeing.

 

OK, granted that was harsh, but Nick had it coming.

So, what is going to happen to Jack?

I liked seeing The Necklace again, so I guess Chuck isn't far behind. Can't wait to see him again.

 

Sam should've just beaten Nick's head into pulp. Just pound away until he's down and out forever.

 

I would say it's not that Jack killed Nick but how he killed him that's wrong, but that's not how they framed it on the show. They've all killed regular people before too, so this is like when the hero mows over 100 henchmen but suddenly becomes moral about killing the main bad guy who is way worse than all the henchmen combined.

 

Well, a lot happened in this episode, including snow-- funny how we got snow in both Walking Dead and Supernatural this week.

Cass and the Faith Healer Angel managed to track down Joshua's version of Jimmy Olson's signal watch by visiting Methuselah-- who, appropriately enough, runs an old curio shop. It didn't seem to work, though, unless it did. But I'm also wondering if the gang will end up using the same method that Nick used to contact Lucifer-- jazz up Donatello with some of Cass's Grace and send out an SOS. We'll see.

And Nick proved to be about as resourceful, and smarmy, as Lucifer ever was-- Lucy must have rubbed off on him-- and came this close to bringing the Big Guy back from the Big Empty. I was actually surprised that the attempt was unsuccessful, because I am fairly certain that we haven't seen the last of him. And Nick may be toast, but I have a feeling that Jack is going to butter him up next episode, because Mary wasn't mad at him-- just disappointed. And that is so much worse.

Assuming Mary is still alive, given that disturbing ending. She better be alive. She better be alive when the series ends, or I'll be very... disappointed. And mad.

And Jack healed Sam, who was about to die from getting hit on the head with a rock. That's great, but I couldn't really take Sam's near-death experience seriously given all the abuse he's taken over the last fourteen years. By this time in real life he'd be so brain damaged that he wouldn't be able to chew with his mouth closed.

So where are we? Lucifer is awake in the Big Empty and looking for a way out, the Keeper of the Big Empty has a secret deal with Cass, Nick is actively trying to resurrect Lucifer, Jack is without a soul and possibly corrupted by (or even possessed by) Michael, the lights in Heaven must be very close to going out thanks to a lack of Angels (and why isn't that Faith Healer Angel up there?), and an APB has been sent out to Chuck. Are all these threads going to dovetail into one big satisfying climax, or what?

 

^ Well, Nick isn't doing anything right now, except lying there, being dead....

 

Given that we saw Jack effortlessly heal Sam, I'd say it's a safe bet he can probably heal Nick.

the damn promo trailer for next week showed Nick. It could be an internal thing and him not revived, but still.

 

Drat! I hate when they do that.

 

I figured it was a good bet that they're not going to be done with Nick and Lucifer until the bitter end.

 

Darn it! They just *had* to have another death.

Well, to be honest, it wasn't all that sad, since she's been properly dead for years. Still, I did get a bit choked up when they showed the initials.

Head-Luci felt wrong here--there was no reason for it, since Sam, Dean & Cas spent far more time with him.

 

They killed Mary. You bastards!

I don't think she'll be coming back from this death

 

I know most people expect that the final season is going to be them killing everyone off but it would be nice if in the final episode they bring everyone back instead. Really doubt they would do that though.

 

^ Concerning the finale, a few months ago I wrote a fanfic about how it could all end.

Cas finally gets sick of the fact that angels aren't the fearsome warriors they used to be (this was before we found out they were endangered), and gets fired up about restoring Heaven--and for that, angels need their wings back, which means getting serious about deciding to tackle reversing Metatron's spell for real.

Sam and Dean dig up a piece of lore that tells them how (big surprise: Crowley lied back in season 9; the spell they're using isn't specifically a spell to restore Heaven, but rather a way for whoever uses it to influence reality). Lucifer is also back (this was before the season 13 finale so don't hold it against me) and when he hears about it, he decides to try to stop them (so he can do it instead). The brothers return to Sioux Falls and dig up something from Bobby's salvage yard (where Cas has to help defend them against a horde of , one ingredient that's needed; they lean on Crowley (again, pre-season 13 finale) for the second, and to get the third, they enlist Rowena's help to spring Michael from the Cage (a scene I'd love to see them actually do: Lucifer tries to pull a "sympathy for the devil" like he did in season 5, but Michael isn't fooled and knocks him back telekinetically before healing the wounds Adam suffered in the Cage, with the same flourish Lucifer did in "Mamma Mia").

They set everything up in the power station above the bunker, but Lucifer and basically every demon in Hell attack before they can. Lucifer kills Rowena, Cas smites demons that aren't in meatsuits, and the brothers do badass Winchester stuff, but it's not enough--even Michael is nearly overwhelmed, but while Lucifer's back is turned, manages to jump-start the spell with a blast of archangel power (the ingredient: "Heaven's brightest light"). A blast of light shoots into the sky, the demons vanish, and time freezes as Chuck appears.

The spell they used? Not about influencing reality at all. It was the divine equivalent of a signal flare, to let Chuck know when everyone He left on earth had found a way to put aside their differences and work together (angels, demons, and humans). Beaming with pride at their achievement, he doesn't restore Rowena (same reason as Cas didn't interfere with Mary's death this week, she's happier in Heaven), but he does offer Crowley an upgrade, restoring his soul and granting him admittance to Heaven. Then he turns to Lucifer, and asks for his help in putting their fractured family back together. With one last sneer at the Winchesters, Lucifer agrees and returns to Heaven. Then he snaps his fingers and restores the wings of every angel in creation, which has the secondary effect of freeing all the trapped souls from the Veil--the clouds part and create a false dawn as all those sparks of light rise up from the Earth and make for Heaven--and the restored angels almost immediately start teleporting into the room to see their father. Finally, for his selfless service and unending faith, Chuck makes Castiel an archangel, and tells him his most important job is about to begin (but we don't find out what it is). To the Winchesters, he gives a speech similar to the one Cas gave Dean at the end of Swan Song--an assurance that they're doing the Lord's work, and that when they pass on, no matter what any reaper says (again, before Billie became Death), they have a place in Heaven and will be reunited with their loved ones.

With that, and a burst of light, everyone except the Winchesters (Cas too) vanish. Cas says his goodbyes--promising to answer their prayers anytime he can--and departs for Heaven. The last shot is Dean locking up the bunker as he and Sam get into Baby and go out on another hunt, and then drive off into the Lebanon sunset.
