That was another scene. In the scene i meant, he used a standard handphaser.

Edit: Iirc the scene with the handphaser was very short and seen during the "Mudd kills Lorca medley"

    Edit 2: Found a pic:

Was thinking that last week too as Mikey was pot shotting the critters.. set a wide beam and wapperize them! ..
That and, we haven't had phaser "Beam" weapons since Enterprise, personel or ship variety.. they've all been pulse type..
that and Enterprise had a "Stun Grenade".. wish they'd use that more often as well!

The assassins wanted to leave a body trail, though. If Gorkon were vaporized, they would have a much harder time pinning it on Kirk and McCoy.

So, a phaser could strip someone of their clothes? Interesting application...

No kidding. I love how the complaint is around not vaporizing people when it really should be how easy it is to stun people.

Star Trek: using technology to not make sense for over 50 years.

Scotty, put the ship's phasers on stun. Fire a burst in a one block radius around these coordinates.

Can't believe they never bothered to pull that trick again, for example.

Phasers that vapourise always bring a better shock value, more oomph, so the more vapourisations the better in my book
Always puzzled me why our heroes always used stun, assuming that the baddies would also use stun
    Never assume, shoot to kill

In many occurrences, they would be better just shooting to kill

I beg you to spell it "vaporize."

I don't think they trust these scientists and explorers with the big-boy weapons, so stun guns should be considered the norm.

To seek out new life to so we can exterminate it.

I seriously cannot take this seriously.

I think that Michael was using the vaporize setting on the phaser. Think about it, phasers vaporize a contiguous body. The Control nanites are individual machines. The phaser bolt vaporises the ones it hits directly but can't spread the way it usually would. Then the remaining nanites fill the hole back in.

Using kill, you can apparently never be sure. If you stun, you have two options: ramp it up and get victory by having every opponent drop, some unconscious, some dead from an overdose - or keep it down and perhaps fail to stun some. Using vaporize, you have only one option but victory is guaranteed.

The trick of stunning a city block would be unlikely to work the intended way in a society that wasn't playacting Chicago gangsters. Some opponents would be other than burly men in their prime, protected by more than a felt hat, and would be taking cover instead of grandstanding in the open; some bystanders would be wandering the streets instead of doing the classic expected yanking-the-pram-indoors-and-spectating-from-inside-a-stone-building act. You'd either get the partial effect, or then lots of baby corpses.

But we know the standard DSC phasers can do it all - beams and pulses, stun and kill and vaporize. The rifles have not stunned yet AFAIK, though. Can all starship phasers do all the tricks? Or is the stun setting something built into Kirk's hardware, rather than a rarity elsewhere for obvious tactical reasons? I hope we get to revisit that one at some point.

Random phaser (or character?) weirdness: why does Tyler switch to vaporize for his last shot in the simulation? Why does Lorca not kill L'Rell during the jailbreak, but misses and scars her instead? How does somebody not made of nanites resist phasers, either on stun or on kill, let alone on vaporize? Why do people sometimes miss, despite obvious autotargeting in other instances, and why don't these people then compensate by sweeping a beam?

Nor am I, but I tend to choose "maneuver" over "manoeuvre", and the rest sort of naturally follows... :p

Oops, ninja'ed. But "nor am I" still holds for that, too.

I’ve lived on 4 continents, but that’s a dealbreaker for not being able to live in certain places.
