I assumed it was fasterer so that the refugees could put themselves out of reach from the regular FTLs. Otherwise, I just kinda rolled with it.Having said that, has anyone explained why this light speed engine thingy is a big deal in a universe that clearly has tons of FTL tech?

That males perfect sense, but they probably shouldn't have been calling it "the light speed engine" in that case. The FTL Drive Mar-Vell created was powered by the Tesserract's energies, which means it doesn't need to use the Jump Gate Network like most others do. So it can go places the Kree can't.
Wow, you come to the weirdest conclusions about things...
It's the difference between taking the train (jump gate) where you have a choice between getting off at stations miles or hundreds of miles apart, and driving (FTL) where you can go directly wherever you want. The FTL Drive Mar-Vell created was powered by the Tesserract's energies, which means it doesn't need to use the Jump Gate Network like most others do. So it can go places the Kree can't.
Also, I don't believe it's ever been said in the MCU that the Kree have to use those jump gates to get from star system to star system in a timely fashion. Has it, anybody?Second, the thing about a jump gate system is that somebody has to go around putting up the gates.
The engine could be a new type like the difference between steam and internal combustion, or it could be something a smaller ship could use to create a jump point that only the large cruisers with massive engines can do sort of like ships in B5?Not in so many words, but Talos says several times that having such a ship would allow Skrull refugees to get beyond the Kree's grasp, implying that the ship is far faster than the gate technology.
It was probably a network made by The Eternals.Except we don't know if the Kree actually set up those gates.
That's actually what I was thinking by taking a page from Babylon 5 and say they were built by one of the "Old Ones."It was probably a network made by The Eternals.![]()
