Things that spoil the illusion...

More common than one might think. A friend had a couple of stills from ST:TMP up on FB today, pointing out exposed structural wood framing in the Sickbay set when Spock is recovering.
Wood: A potentially renewable and sustainable material. People in the future would be smart to use it! ;)

I heard an engineer once say that wood is such a great plastic that if nature had not invented it, a scientist would have.

and imagine how tall you could grow trees on a low grav planet.I need to go ahead and stake out some territory on the moon for my Giant Christmas Tree Farm Dome. It will be a bit difficult getting them to customers, though.

I grew up watching DARK SHADOWS on TV. This is nothing. :)

Seriously, I almost never notice this stuff. Too busy paying attention to the story.

Maybe it's fun to nitpick when going over each scene in frame-by-frame on dvd/bluray, but if someone notices these things on first viewing AND it takes them out of the suspension of disbelief, then sorry, you shouldn't be watching sci-fi in the first place. All shows/movies have these kinds of mistakes, everyone's better off just letting go.

Of course, there are some things that once seen cannot be unseen, like the anonymous kid in the background who covers his ears before the gun is fired in Hitchcock's North by Northwest. But, again, I'm not sure I would have ever noticed that if it wasn't pointed out in countless articles about classic Hollywood bloopers.

This. And the overuse of the delta. Like a lot of things in the show, it is Star Trek, we get it.
They could have taken a hint from costuming on Beyond where they got rid of the embedded arrowhead in the shirt fabric and it looked much better.

Hopefully they transition over to the new uniforms later in the season or by 3. I suspect they paid a lot for them and they're going to get at least 2 seasons use out of them.

Ugh. I MUCH preferred the 09 and STiD uniforms to those in Beyond.

I'd have to put a lot of this on the same level as the people who complained about continuity between shots in Doctor Who when it was apparently "obvious" that the Doctor and Clara were sipping out of empty coffee cartons due to the length of the take.

Some people have too much time on their hands or are not involved enough in the story.

Or have the Holmesian type cognitive issues from the Cumberbund/Downey Jr versions, in which case stop watching sci-fi and go out and catch those murderers, you lazy twonks!

I often notice (but don't really care) in TV shows that a person's hands or something might be in different positions depending on the camera angle, which happens because each camera angle is often a different take and each is edited together as if being one.

Even though these stick out, they never ruin the illusion or take me out of a scene. I mean, I'm well aware that it's all play-acting, so accidental visions of that play-acting doesn't startle me.

I love watching the show and spotting things that take you out of the reality of the show and reveal how things are being done form a production level.

For example sometimes it is obvious that they are redressing sets. This happens quite a bit between federation sets but you'd be surprised how often they do it. A good example is the Discovery hallways and Transporter rooms have snap on/off panels so they could switch between it and the Shenzhou. A sad example is when they converted the Discovery transporter room into the the Bahoul pool room is VERY obvious.

You can see plenty of things that look suspiciously like iPads (which they are).

I was watching Season 1 and noticed when Saru and Michael were walking down the hall eating blueberries you can see a gap in the wall which shows the plywood that the set is made out of :D
You can also see they cut had the actors walk back a little and pretend the hall is longer as they walk by the gap twice.

You guys notice anything else?

My favourite was in TNG when you could see the strong reflection of the boom operator chewing gum :D

Sadly I have been noticing on discovery a lot that when people push things on the display panels there is no reaction or there is a timing/sync issue.

For example if you watch Tilly when she is talking about the Sphere and she rewinds the timeline of Saru's homeworld and her finder and the dial aren't matched. Also she lifts her finger and it keeps scrolling. This is obviously because the screen is just playing an animation that she is trying to match.

Pretty funny.
I catch some weird and completely obscure plot holes on first watch, and can pretty easy spot most internal inconsistencies even if they are really well hidden.

But they could have a camera-operator walk right into the frame, and I would completely miss it.
Same for other real obvious stuff, like when they mirror an image of an actor to keep eyelines, or are obviously cutting a conversation between two different spaces. I never notice these on my own!

For some reason that red outline reminds of the episode of TOS where Kirk has that big rock um, thingy in his hand.
:alienblush:
Ahhhh, the infamous Kirk-Cock-Rock ....

Ikea is waaay to GD expensive.
But the meatballs and berry soda in the cafeteria make up for it :D
I've bought a few storage items from Ikea and they've held up for a long time, so I'm happy enough with them.
When someone figures out how to build small starships, Ikea will have one you can buy in a big thin box and assemble yourself.
