The Holy Core—A Star Trek (TNG) Fan Film

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet in the forum, but there's a new Star Trek (TNG) fan film on the horizon.

Here's the trailer for the upcoming release, "The Holy Core":



These are the same folks who did "Chance Encounter":



For this new production, they reused the shuttle set from "Chance Encounter," as well as building a ready room, deflector control compartment and partial bridge pieces. Looks pretty impressive from a fan film production perspective. I'm looking forward to seeing what they've come up with.

Hopefully the script is less cringe-worthy than the creepy manipulative Chance Encounter.

 

Not sure what you mean by that, Chance Encounter was a fan film gem.

Here's what I wrote about that film (link) but the key issues I had were:

...His stealing a shuttle adds nothing to the story except an excuse to have scenes with other characters talking about how clever he is. Which raises...

The whole film is about how wonderful he is. He's so smart, clever, and then when Rose goes on and on about his good points... ugh. Gary Stu is right.

Rose's decision. My problem with this film has always centered around its slotting itself into a tired stereotype about a woman having to choose between love and career, something almost no one ever does with a male character. And how come younger him gets to be in uniform and she has to be "elegant"? It's also uncomfortable that he goes back to talk his future wife into being with him instead of, oh, I dunno, going back to share some special moment with her, or be there for her at a time he should have been but wasn't. She did marry him ultimately, so he chose this moment to step back in time so he could hear her sing his praises?

That the subplot features yet another female character rejecting love for career reinforces my issues with the main story, and the implication that she's a walking icebox/Vulcan for her attitude, is ew.​

 

"The Holy Core" looks good! Great sets and effects, very nice performances as well.

I'm looking forward to it.

I agree with the other poster, the world can do with more TNG fan films!

What I got out of it was he went back to convicer to marry him, or let her talk herself into it, because he somehow saw an alternate history in which she didn't marry him, in which they parted ways and wer never together again.

 

See I didn’t really get any of this from that story. What I got was that he missed her and went back to a pivotal moment to see her one last time. I don’t think the intent was anything more than that.

But I can certainly see what both of you do as well. I guess we all interpret these things differently.

"The Holy Core" fan film is set to premier this Sunday, May 12th at 7 PM British Standard Time.

Just finished watching it. It's really quite good. The story was engaging and I loved the sets and visual effects. Apart from the acting being a little off in the first act, my only real criticism is that in a fan film about religion they chose to call the bad guy Jesus (Hebrew = Yeshua). I would not have used that name for the villain, no more then I would have use the name Mohammed or Buddha as a villain, as it's probably going to rub some people up the wrong way.

Also releasing parts one and two together in the same video is probably not what CBS had envisioned fans doing when the released the guidelines. Hopefully CBS won't care about that.

 

First impression—one of the better fan films in quite a while. Great production values and felt very much like a later TNG episode, around season 5 or 6.

I’ll have more thoughts after I watch it again.

 

I was genuinely surprised at how good the writing was, especially the dialogue. Kudos to the team behind The Holy Core for tackling a topic that could easily be fumbled by amateur writers.

 

This was very entertaining! I do hope that you guys continue to make more of these. I am amazed by how with each of your productions you guys are able to create sets reminiscent to the show, but produced with zero budget.

Don't suppose you guys plan on releasing your set blueprints for others to reference in the future?

 

Decent production values. It looks good. The number of locations is varied, which is nice.

Too many of the scenes go on too long, though, and the pace flags.

I found some of the dialog hard to follow because of the sound quality in places, even though it's largely fine.

EDIT: I meant to say this originally, but I want to give a big kudos to the filmmakers for trying to make a story about something, not just some pointless puzzle-box adventure. What's often seen as a conflict between religion and science is an interesting topic and one worth exploring. The danger of course is that it's easy to send the wrong messages. I must honestly say I didn't like where they went with it and how, but I still applaud the effort even as I am not very enthusiastic about the results.

Spoiler: details of the story

OMG it starts with a dull Captain's log followed by technobabble salad exposition dump. I already don't care. Hook me for Pete's sake.

Ok, once things get going it's much better, but I still eye-roll at the idea that some 3rd party can get into a critical area of the ship with some sabotage device that miraculously works on the Fed computers and he can run the ship's weapons AND he manages to smuggle a hand weapon in, too.

The bad guy's name being Yeshua is...tacky in an on the nose way.

Oh lookie, another female character bites it so the male lead can anguish with no effective resolution to his story. It's just "ouch" and out.

The people on this planet sure accept this artifact readily. Too readily. They just fall over themselves to accept this new message after 500 years of conflict and opposed ideologies. I don't buy it.

I am seriously tired of predestination paradoxes.

Doesn't matter that they Edith Keelered the prophet, since the radiation consumed him minutes later. He was doomed anyway. EDIT: See Tosk's reply for a counter-point (link).

I saw where the episode was going and it went there. It's not a story I would tell, and that's fine, but in this age of growing anti-science it's not a story I care to see given where they went with it. But I'm not about to tell them what to make. I just don't like it. YMMV.

Dramatically, however, the predestination paradox and the unlikelihood of such coincidences as portrayed makes it hard to see this as anything but "god's will" even to the captain. I would have found the ending more satisfactory had sister Zorah interpreted it as a divine act whereas the Captain more clearly seeing it as something else, because she comes across as too credulous. There's a saying in some circles that goes, "Science tells us how God created the world, the Bible tells us why," and that's the direction I'd have gone had this been my story. Their mileage clearly varies.

3:44 & 28:55 the ambient sound changes when I assume the door closes, but there's no close door sound even though there's an open sound. Oops.

 

Great TNG era fan film I enjoyed watching it.

But that too was only because of them. According to Starfleet Officer, the tech radiation was interacting with the tech particles. Prophet Man took the initial bust of it. So if they hadn't ever shown up, he'd have been fine. Also, hours rather than minutes surely. They crashed at night and awoke during the day.
