What was all the EVA activity shown around the Discovery at the beginning of the episode?

The early loss of her parents, and the search for family, has been at the core of the Michael Burnham character since the pilot.

(Maybe it makes sense to me because there are strands in my personal life that resonate with it.)

Wasn’t there a timeloop episode last season involving Mudd and a time crystal? Or is it one of the Short Treks I’m thinking of?

nothing i can say (rant) won’t have been covered by the preceding 11 pages, but here on the west coast i just finished the episode. and ugh.

i liked this episode. i laughed at the georgiou/stamets/culber interplay and tilly’s “what just happened?”, i almost cried at spock trying to console a sister he detests, i was thrilled by michael being strapped to a chair and sacrificed before the red angel.

but man do i wish they didn’t go here.

as a show about a crew and comraderie, discovery succeeds, beautifully telling stories about teamwork. but as a series about michael burnham it sucks.

the premise of exploring the world of trek through the eyes of a brilliant, non-captain, underdog is a good one. but the producers continually mistake telling stories about a character with telling stories that hinge on that character. it was a relief michael wasn’t the angel, but wouldn’t it have been even better if the angel showed up, took off its helmet, and said “who the hell are you?”

as spock said last week (and this week), michael thinks she carries the weight of the universe on her shoulders. it’s as noble as it is annoying. wouldn’t it be more satisfying if the universe didn’t really revolve around michael burnham but she has agency enough to be part of saving the day anyway?

burnham is continually led around the galaxy by the plot, rarely by her own decisions and motivations. i love SMG’s performance and can’t help but love michael. but damned if i didn’t wish she was just out there saving the galaxy rather than also always being the reason the galaxy needs saving.

The Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ep. While still turning the Time Crystal theory into scifi territory, but closer to what the actual science posits (repeating time).

I certainly hope they will explain these. I think they have to explain why RA saved the Church. But as to how she knew Michael Burnham was in danger in the past, I am not holding my breath for that explanation.

When I was a kid, Friday night was Cliffhanger night, Doctor Who and Republic Serials on Magic Shadows on TVO. It was great. Cliff hangers are awesome! My mom, however, hated them.

The AI answered with his voice. It copied his voice just before it skewered his eyeball.

unless it was control using its mimickery.

but yeah my take was he’s alive, but infected with some kind of futuristic plot device.

Well he's no Robert Picardo, but... :p Seriously if this director does for the Picard premiere what she did for this episode, it will be glorious. A bit shorter an episode, but so much expertly crammed in. (That's what she said) I loved the character moments between Burnham and Spock and the "love is a choice" (paraphrasing?) line by the Admiral with Culber. Sonequa really channeled her Shat in the pissed off fighting scenes and quieter moments with Ash. Liked the "these doors always open on their own" moment too. Lots of buildup and no letdown--a 9 from me.

I’d go with a 6 for this episode.

I dunno, it had a lot of good moments, like the Stamets/Georgiou/Culber interaction “did you just call me Papi?” Or the little smirk from Pike when Spock was giving Burnham the business after the brain scan. Saru singing was even nice and unexpected. But everything else just didn’t work for me.

I’m glad the RA isn’t Burnham. But making it her mother? Hopefully the payoff is good. The star crossed love story with Burnham and Tyler feels really forced. And is it me or have they really ramped up Tilly’s “annoying meter” the last few episodes?

You've figured out why this series seems so convoluted. A time traveling AI in the writer's room is using plot devices that won't be invented for another 500 years!
