Spoilers Season 3 character announcement

I have just seen a report on deadline that Anson and Rebecca are leaving at the end of season two and that it was always the plan.

https://deadline.com/2019/03/anson-...ijn-altercation-director-season-2-1202577741/

It would not surprise me if it is because the Pike/Enterprise show has been given a green light and any contracts for the new show would have to be signed as the original contracts were just for season two.

It may not have been the original plan but CBS would be foolish to ignore the possibility as both characters have been well received.

Plus its suspicious that there is no announcement about Ethan Pecks future.

That is of course assuming that the three of them actually want to do a Pike/Enterprise show.

They are leaving themselves with big shoes to fill in the name of continuity.

Pike and Georgiou, the two best characters, are leaving. Lorca needs to return because everyone else is boring.

Pike spin off please.
true.

Lorca was the best character in season 1 apart from sarek. he needs to return.

I also hope they introduce another classic character from TOS. Rand, Scotty, Sulu or Uhura.

no doubt they will leave the big two Kirk and McCoy until the last season

When the season started, I wanted for Pike to stay no longer than one season. Now I really wish he could stay for another. Generally, I'm very pleased with the concepts of "changing Captains" for the first few seasons though - at least it's new.

That being said - having Pike end up in THE wheelchair at the end of this season? Not a good idea. First of all it creates a ton of canon and continuity issues (why did Spock waited 10 years to help his old friend? "The menagerie" made it pretty clear that Spck wanted to help him pretty much "immediately", not farted around ten years until he felt like doing it).

The other thing is - a random accident is just so, so, so much more effective a tragedy than some "heroic sacrifice" (which they'll inevitably do). It's the samy reason why Spider-Man's origin is so effective, whereas every retcon where Uncle Ben's murder was part of a larger scheme/conspiracy to manipulate Peter Parker turned out to be utter bull-crap.

Pike...and more specifically, Anson Mount AS Pike...has been my favorite Discovery character since the first episode of season 2.

I hope he'll be back in some way and on a regular basis.

If they were smart, they’d do a couple of Pike TV movies to fill some of the space between Discovery and Picard seasons. The character has proven too popular to just discard.

Yeah - I've generally been against a "Cpt. Pike on the Enterprise"-series, because it conceptually would be way too close to what DIS already is. But I would absolutely be down for a Cpt. Pike mini.series, Short Treks or something like that!

I agree and add: If Paramount was smart they'd go with Mount and crew for a new series of movies and work out the details with CBS.

Doesn't Kirk say that Pike "handed off" control of the Enterprise to him in The Menagerie? It seems to imply that he stayed in command till 2265.

I'm wondering if the comment "shades of where we know Pike will end up" means Pike will be given a glimpse of his future via the Red Angel.

Actually, if Pike knows it, and then Spock knows it, it makes Spock's insistence he return to Talos all the more understandable. Have to maintain the timeline after all.

Having him leave doesn't mean he ends up in the chair. He's still got a good five years before that happens.

They specifically said shades of where we know he'll end up. That, to me, implies we'll see how Pike's new situation after Discovery could lead up to what eventually happens. i.e. He begins training cadets. Or it's a Red Angel glimpse into the future. Either way, I don't think he ends up in the chair right after his stint on Discovery.

The TV Guide article seems to suggest that S2 catches up with cannon and that S3 will be set in the same years as TOS. That would mean that Pikes accident happened aboard DSC?

Interesting that they are making a big deal out of Number One not returning, which seems rather odd since (so far) she has only appeared in one episode :cardie:

Captain Pike (Anson Mount) may have quickly become a fan-favorite character on Star Trek: Discovery, but fans shouldn't get too attached, apparently.

According to Deadline, Mount and guest star Rebecca Romijn, who plays Number One, are set to exit Discovery at the end of Season 2, when the series catches up to the original seriestimeline. The stars reportedly only signed one-year contracts, so it's no surprise to those behind the scenes.

The idea that Discovery will catch up to TOS at the end of Season 2 is really where the drama comes in though. The character of Captain Pike only appeared in one episode of Star Trek, and he ends up being paralyzed, disfigured, and mute. If Discovery catches up to that timeline, it means Pike is in for a very dangerous encounter that will force him to leave Starfleet and pave the way for James T. Kirk to take over the U.S.S. Enterprise.

"This season we get inside his character in a way that we we didn't get to do in the films," Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman told Deadline in January. "And the fact that we will synchronize with canon by the end of this season, that means we may see shades of where we all know Pike will end up."

When Discovery premiered, it was 10 years before the original series kicked off. If the show catches up, that means the events of Season 3, already ordered by CBS All Access, will run parallel to the events of the iconic show and the actions of Discovery could impact the paths of the crew of the Enterprise. Could this mean that Kirk could show up in Season 3? Or will Discovery find a way to not be confined by canon already set? We already know there is a mirror universe where Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew could show up. Just a thought!

TV Guide reached out to CBS All Access for confirmation but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is currently airing Thursdays on CBS All Access.

I'm not seeing the benefit of skipping over almost 10 years' worth of development for Discovery's characters. The only advantage is that it makes it plausible for Burnham to be a Captain.

EDIT: Unless Pike is off-ship and Discovery somehow returns from the "Calypso" era, but misses the mark by 10 years. That would put them squarely in TOS. And you don't have to wonder about "Why doesn't everyone look 10 years older?"

I thought this was kind of assumed from the beginning that Mount wouldn't be a permanent member of the cast, right? And I agree, the Number One announcement is a bit strange.
