It was a decent episode but I didn't feel sad about Ariam's death. Until this episode she's been a glorified extra. Tilly and everyone crying their eyes out for her because she's their friend would've been more effective if the writers had spent any time actually showing those friendships developing.

The Red Angel is all about Michael. It probably is Michael. Was it ever going to lead anywhere else? Of course not.

Pike, Control and Spock/Burnham was decent but last week's episode with the Talosians will be hard to beat. I'm still wishing the show was an ensemble. Everything revolving around Burnham is tedious and limited.

The idea of Control being based on one disused space station is a little wonky. Surely it's software spread throughout the entire Federation computer network?

Another case where the shorter seasons make it impossible to show us those moments. It was enough for me that Tilly and the others sold the friendships.

Why couldn’t Nhan have put on her space helmet to breathe? Surely her spacesuit must’ve had a Barzan setting? And why not beam Airium into a brig on Discovery at the end?

WTF. After Michael's fight with Ariam when she gets her locked in another room, she pays no attention to the fact that Nhan is suffocating to death?

I see a lot of complaints about Burnham not trying to save Nhan. It is a valid criticism but I didn’t have an issue with it.

Burnham was trying to save her own life, and also the life of her friend (airiam). It’s understable that under this great duress she forgot about the character that is basically a stranger to her. Honestly I forgot about Nhan too until they showed her again.

If anything this proves that Burnham is not Mary Sue.

Cause she had just been flung 50+ meters across the room smashing the back of her spacesuit against a wall and knocking the breath out of her and most likely disabling her suit helmet.

She managed to survive because Airiam only pulled the left side of Nahan's respirator off, not the whole thing.

Michael was a tad bit busy getting the crap kicked out of her also.
And then was completely preoccupied with trying to prevent Airiam from completing the task Control had forced upon her.

The fact that nobody was paying attention to what Nahan was doing (including Control) was probably what gave her the chance to sneak up and open the airlock.

I can understand she was preoccupied at the time, but I think it's out of character for her not to be singularly distracted by any life in imminent danger. Especially since helping her would have taken all of two seconds, and she had time to sit back and assess when she got the door closed.

Some interesting dialog in that scene between Burnham and Spock. How he said "You should have known they would shoot first". But she did know that and that's why she committed mutiny. Interesting seeing Spock's perspective on the events of the premiere, and his analysis of Burnham always taking all the burden on herself which we've observed is a good way to describe her biggest flaw.

Barzan is not a Federation member, right? Or at least, they are not in 2366, or else the Federation wouldn't have had to bid.

Another fantastic episode. If this season can stick the landing, it may go down as one of my favorites in all of Trek. Which is saying something after the mediocre first season.

I would have preferred if Airiam's character development had been dealt out over time instead of all in the one episode where she dies, but they still did a great job of making me care for the character and her sacrifice.

I wonder if Airiam's memory downloads into the Discovery databanks form the basis for the ship's AI consciousness "Zora" 1,000 years in the future? That would be a nice way to keep her around and tie the events of that Short Trek back into the narrative.

I'm 90% convinced Michael is the Red Angel after this episode and Airiam's remark about how she's the key. I'm sure that will have the Mary Sue brigade up at arms, but fuck 'em.

So CONTROL is, as suspected, the AI trying to destroy all sentient biological life in the galaxy in the future with its squibots.

The 3D chess scene between Michael and Spock is already one of my favorite scenes in Trek now. And I loved that his unconventional chess tactics trying to sew chaos were the clue to how to avoid the mines.

Then they deliver another classic scene in the same episode with Airiam's sacrifice at the end. Anyone who says Sonequa Martin-Green can't act or emote is full of shit. And kudos to Hannah Cheesman for a great performance as well.

Atrium could have been an interesting character if she just wasnt in the background for a season and a half, I would have felt more if they had killed Linus. The stress playing her was interesting, I wish we knew her better

Why are they writing Tilly as a liability on the bridge, I’d want her yammering about some inanity just as the shit was hitting the fan if I was Pike I’d be spacing tilly

I agree that I would have preferred more development for her throughout the past season and a half. I think I mentioned a few times last season "Don't put another cool ass cyborg on the bridge and not tell me about it again" (like the guy in STID). But that ship has sailed, and all things considered, for stuffing 90% of her character development into five minutes of one episode, they managed to do an excellent job of making me like her as a character and to feel her profound loss to Michael, Tilly, and Detmer especially.

Her sacrifice and its effect on her friends made me tear up, and though I would have loved to see more of her, I give them credit for actually going through with killing her (even though they should have just been able to beam her aboard). If her downloaded memories turns out to be the basis for the Zora AI on the ship, maybe there's still a way to keep her around "in spirit."

I don't think it's the shorter seasons. 15 episodes is pretty long these days. I think the problem is the fact every episode has to have Burnham as the focus so there's no time to develop anyone else. Even if there were, they certainly spent no time developing Ariam at all until this episode and that's down to the rigid direction of the premise of Discovery. It will always be this way. This is not a typical Trek spin off ensemble piece. It's The Burnham Show from start to finish. Everyone else is just along for the ride.
