Like their cover story for getting these built (and maybe even the real story, at this point in Starfleet history) is that they're used by Starfleet's Internal Affairs division for transporting IA officers and ops?Really? Okay, that would work for me, too. Either way.I was thinking something like "Intelligence Asset". I hope there aren't 93 of these things, and just mostly shuttles/runabouts fill out the NCIA registry.
I think the NCIA registry is top-secret, whereas NCC ships are public knowledge (even if internal details, a la Discovery, are secret), and NX ships are testbeds. N is Naval and denotes Starfleet (or, at least, their outer space registry), and the C here probably denotes the Contract number.
Naval Construction Contract - per fandom
Naval Experiment - probably used in homage to the experimental NX class
Naval Contracted Intelligence Asset - that it is a Construction Contract (NCCIA?) is probably implied.
And there are now at-least 3 of those things. It was cool when it was one-of-a-kind kind of deal. Now it's just another ship. Boooring...
