Paranoia in the Federation

The paranoids get removed by the various Temporal Departments, unless the paranoia was tied to a historical event.

Must have been a real pisser every couple of days aboard Kirk's ship
Down in the lower decks. . . . . ."Aw fuck, the Captains gone insane, been replaced by a doppleganger, behaving strangely, . . . . .again"
Or...”Remember Darnell?(or a dozen other names)..beamed down to that planet with the captain and ..never came back!”

The only reason the war ended when it did, was because the cure was dangled in front of the Founders as a reward for surrendering.

IIRC, the cure was dangled by Odo, not Section 31.

As I understand it, Section 31 fully intended to wipe out the Founders from the get-go, and never intended to offer the cure. Hell, the only reason there WAS a cure is because it was stolen from Sloan's mind (Extreme Measures).

I don't think anyone deserves to be tased over a minor slip-up, but I guess that's why I'm not leadership material.
Certainly not in the Mirror Universe. There are periods in Earth history that this type of management style would be mellow in comparison. You are just looking at things through the 21th century American/European lens which is a great system to currently live under.

then why was there a cure in the frist place? it was a barganing tool, and a last resort weapon. remember, after the federation council gained control of the cure, they used it to malnipulate the founders.

one team pulling together.

Because it was ripped from Sloan's mind.

"Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong."

The cure was not used as a bargaining tool. There was absolutely no evidence that Section 31 ever planned to use it. The cure was presented personally, by Odo, to the Founder leader.

No one else - not Section 31, not the Federation Council, not the Starfleet admiralty - ever had custody of the cure. That was all Odo.

^Well, the question remains why the cure was known in the first place to a person like Sloane. As I understand it, it's not as if you automatically obtain the cure to a virus by developing that virus (unless of course 24th century has advanced to that point). So why would they have bothered to look for / also develop a cure in the first place? Just as a precaution in the event the virus would "jump" species ?

All in all (returning to the main question), I'd say there's a disturbing lack of paranoia in the Trek universe, too much trust in technology. There are too many 'but this is a duranium shielded door, and the secutity lock is protected by recursive fractal encryption algorithms! In the 176 years since the introduction of these doors, no-one has ever been able to .... oh, I see you unlocked it with your hairpin' - moments. Perhaps people had been living in a utopia for just a bit too long by the 24th century. (That's not meant to defend the Essentialist view, though).

In fact I'd say that the Dominion War and the Borg threat restored some healthy perspective of dangers and sensible precautions (We see this development in for example the Voyager EMH being so surprised that so much crucial information on the new Prometheus test ship is only reachable with sufficient security clearance).

Section 31 prepares for all eventualities. It was not their intention to cure the Founders or bargain with them to end the war or even surrender in exchange for the cure. However, they did not discount the possibility of unforeseen circumstances arising in which a cure would be beneficial to the Federation, so they made sure one existed.

With the frequency that Star Fleet officers are either evil, replaced by doppelgangers, or mind controlled why aren't people more paranoid? I mean it should be to the point where red flags would be raised very easily. "He never took cream in his coffee before. Better alert security." "She always had long hair. Now it's short. Make over? Nah, Better play it safe and alert security."
But what is the frequency? Seems like a pretty small percentage given how many people are in Starfleet and the population of the Federation.

They gave the cure to Sloan so Bashir could go through his fun little mind trip to get it and give it to Odo and end the war. Let's dispel this fiction that Section 31 didn't know what would happen. They knew exactly what would happen.

Bashir was a tool that Section 31 used twice on the show successfully.
