USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

It looks more like a Photoshop than a CG render - crushed the engineering hull vertically, pasted in the nacelles as seen from above, mucked about with some bits of the pylons.

Agree. The Disco Enterprise feels like a hodgepodge of ideas that don't create a cohesive whole.

Honestly, the 09-Beyond Enterprise felt more cohesive as a design, despite borrowing from previous designs.

The 09-Into Darkness JJprise did have a cohesive design. I'd argue the proportions are screwed up (as they are on many JJTrek ships that aren't the Kelvin or shuttlecraft), but there was a consistent design ethos. The Beyond redesign broke what worked and made worse what didn't.

The Discoprise has a more cohesive basic structure. I'm not sure all the details dovetail with that though. The pylon gaps and the line of lights above the registry break up what should be cleaner lines. But that's minor. I *really* hate the docking port between the impulse engines. "Let's just fly between the two biggest sources of turbulence on a vehicle on the way to the docking port. Hopefully we don't get flung into a nacelle."

Sidenote, before writing this I refreshed my memory of the DSC Enterprise by looking at that big $9,000 Anovos model. Now I kinda want one. :-/

Somebody refresh my memory, did they set out to include the Enterprise in the finale from the start or was it a mid-season decision. Because everything else ship design wise is consistent except for the Constitution Class. So they had a set look for the show then had to some how squeeze in the Enterprise while Disco-fying it. That’s why it looks hodgepodge. At least IMO.

They said they always planned to end with the Big E. However who knows how much changed from Fuller’s involvement to actual execution.

according to the eaglemoss magazine, the enterprise was not in fact intended to show up in the season finale, but was always expected to feature in season 2, so it was bumped up. however, john eaves says in the magazine that the designers had from april 2017 to october 2017 to work on it. it was apparently designed to be a hybrid of the NX-01, enterprise refit, even the enterprise-B (the bottom of the impulse deck) as well as the classic ship.

but it does include a lot of elements from the fleet ships from the battle of the binary stars (fins, the ring around the top of the hull, shenzhou-ish shuttlebay landing, light strip over the registry). why doesn’t it include more identifiable elements from the discovery herself that would’ve helped them look more compatible on screen together? beats the hell out of me.

Certainly none of the Pike/Spock stuff from this season was planned, as it directly contradicts the first Disco novel, which was officially sanctioned from an idea from Fuller IIRC.

I don't care for it. I think it sticks out like a sore thumb and looks dumb.
Indeed. At this point I'm okay with a bridge window - but that enourmoous cut-out is just an incredible waste of space - you'd expect a spaceship to make use of every single room it has...

You'd think the bridge would be better protected than that.
You could say that about all Federation ships.
Pretty much one of the worst aspects of Federation ship design.

Theoretically this shouldn't be an issue - if you're in a universe with matter-antimatter-weapons, you're protection against them are shields, not walls. A matter-anti-matter weapon doesn't care if it has to go through an outer hull, or an outer hull and two deck floors. Makes no difference.

(In fact - that's my headcanon-reason for the placement of the bridge: that this is closest to where the shields are generated and thus protected the strongest)

In praxis though - yeah, we've seen enough ships being hit by poton torpedos with shields down that we know it makes a difference.... Still, there is real-life precedence - on a ship, every part of the ship is a critical part, so which ones are outside and which ones more inside is guided by other design principles - the (most explod-y) warp-core being protected the most in the middle of the ship is a good one for example.

Yeah, pretty much everyone had the bridge at the top or front of the ship so there's obviously no advantage in burying deep within the ship. The bridge at the top means it's far away from the warp reactor and engines, and the bridge crew can be the last to evacuate if necessary.

This piece of....artwork is in a restaurant in Arizona. Notice that the registry lights illuminate OUTER LIMITS.

I’ve said this before, but IrishTrekkie has a YouTube video going over the Eaglemoss book, and the quality and resolution is high enough (on a1080p monitor) to read the pages. If you want to read the BTS info for yourself.

There’s a great image of different designs they tried before getting approval from the art director. Some of them are very close to the original.

Since Eaves and Co. were told not to make it 1:1 to the TOS Connie, they tried to make it as close as possible while meeting the show 25% difference guideline. I think they did a great job in the constraints they were given.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but is this the video that you are referring to? :
