Welcome to the February edition of the Fan Art Forum Challenge!

Do you remember Amalgam Comics? For a short time in the 90s the publishing houses of DC Comics and Marvel Comics merged into one fictional universe where all their characters were combined with their respective counterparts. So instead of Superman and Captain America there was the Super-Soldier. Batman (Bruce Wayne) and Wolverine (Logan) became Dark Claw (Logan Wayne). Spider-Man and Superboy merged into Spider-Boy. Well, you get the gist of it … ;)

This month I'd like to do a Trek spin on this idea. Let's freely mix and match the characters, places, species, ships and technology from all the Star Trek shows with one another. Kind of like Tuvok + Neelix = Tuvix, but without the bad aftertaste. ;)

    • How about Captain John Luke Janeway? What does he look like? And more importantly, does he drink coffee or tea?
    • What would a cross between the Federation flagship and a Klingon battleship look like? Show us the I.K.S. Enterprise!
    • What exactly does a Bholian look like? A blue-skinned Tholian, basically?

Here are the rules (from the Art Challenge Guidelines):
    • the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge
    • only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
    • your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)
    Any questions or suggestions?

I'm looking forward to your ideas! Have fun! :)

I can't wait. The canvas is already whispering ideas to me.

I'm Deaf so that's really trippy and freaky.

I have an idea. I'm gonna do some sketches before doing an acrylic painting

    I did a couple sketches.

I started the canvas. Here's what I had done up to earlier this afternoon. It has more detailing now. But I bet you guys can tell what it's supposed to be..

Ah, it's a Deep Space Nine style station merged with a saucer and warp nacelles, right? That's interesting and certainly something I haven't seen before, which is why I like it. :) Did you find time to further work on any details? And did you name it yet?

Unfortunately it has been another busy month for me thus far and I didn't really find time to work on something. I hope I'll be able to do something next week.

Do we have any other takers for this month's contest?

I added some details after taking that picture. I'll work on it more this weekend.

Ooh, fab! I love your paintings, @Finn

I have an idea for this month's art challenge which I'm hoping to work on next week (moving house tomorrow, so I can kiss goodbye to this weekend): "Disco-Maroon", is all I'm saying for now.

    From a page I contributed to here. (Concept--not art--mine.)

It's definitely out of my comfort zone, as I normally do green landscapes.

What an intriguing amalgam, @Finn. The USS Déesse, NCC-9, perhaps?

@Michael : I'm sorry to say that I haven't found time to work on "Disco-Maroon", and it's looking extremely unlikely that I'll do so this evening or tomorrow (plus, no internet connection in the new house yet - I'm typing this from my sister's), so go ahead without me.

Awwh, I look forward to see your physical media entries, @Cyfa. :bolian: Hope things settledown for you soon.

I wasn't sure I'd find time this month, but here's another quick entry from me:

The "Wanted Poster" surround was a last minute idea and I'll admit it's a bit underdeveloped.

Whew, I'm so glad to see some more entries. I was beginning to think this was just going to be between @Finn and me this time. Still, I think my contest theme idea might have been a little too unnecessarily intricate this time around. I know in the end I struggled a bit to find something for my entry I really liked and I can't say I'm overly satisfied with the result.

But anyway, I love what you have done with your painting, @Finn! Very expressionistic use of colors! I especially like the way the space background turned out. :techman:

@Starscape: I always love your surprising last minute entries and this one doesn't disappoint. “Harcourt Fenton Quark” is an awesome idea and the execution is just flawless. Very nice!

@Cyfa: Don't worry, I perfectly understand. Finding time to do these things isn't getting easier for me as well. I hope everything went well with your move and you'll eventually visualize the “Disco-Maroons” anyway. :)

@publiusr: Very interesting concept! I would love to be able to see her from other angles as well. This is not an entry to the contest though, right? As I understand it you did this in 2011?

Once I hear back from @publiusr I'll post the voting thread. But before that, here's my own entry. As you can see, it's somewhat on the silly side. :)

Thanks, @Michael! February's theme had lots of potential, so much so it took me quite some time to wade through the possibilities to find one with that little extra spark.

Katrice Picard - it's kind of unsettling, but nicely done.

@Finn, I've much respect for anyone who can put paint on a canvas. I feel naked without my undo button. ;)

    Well...
I had thought to participate but coming up with something new and what I consider to be interesting that would fall in this category was daunting.
Ergo, I'm displaying this not as an entry but because I thought it might have developed into an entry given more time and imagination.

As most know by now, my interests lie in the Axanar, Klingon war era and this drop ship is a bit more rustic than the tech I usually see re ST.
This ship I currently call the "Reaver" is equipped to carry an 11m long container that can be used as either a cargo transport or as a military troop, drop container.
It utilizes VTOL tech with a combination of high pressure gas and M/AM technology allowing both atmospheric and vacuum travel.
It also boasts rockets and rotary, projectile cannons as well as light, phasers for defense but aside from a reflective armor coating against phasers, and heavy armor construction, it has no other defensive attributes.
Similar to a Huey helicopter, here will be two pilots with a full canopy view above and below their feet, and a navigator forward, a cargo technician and two gunners midsection with a canopy view above and below them as well to aid in collecting the cargo containers and sighting combatants and two cargo technicians rear at the rear access ramp and gangway.

I honestly, think projectile weapons will be more prevalent along side of phasers especially for armor piercing, surface to surface, air to surface and personal combat.
Seems to me that any Klingon shot with an SW40 at close range would be just as dead as with a phaser. And on that thought, I've often wondered, would he be cut up with the phaser? It is a continuous laser beam.

"Phaser's, being the evolutionary apex of lasers, utilize a structured beam of light as conduit for varying speed/strength pulses of highly charged subatomic particles fictionally known as Nadion's."

Seems to me, that if the victim is wearing any type of reflective clothing, that effect would be either reflected or absorbed, reducing the affect.
Further, since there is no inherent matter involved in this weapon, there would also be no inertial affects by that light reflective armor the opponent is wearing.

That being the case, wouldn't it then be prudent to carry a projectile weapon of suitable caliber and force to, at the very least as with body armor, knock your opponent off his feet and break something inside him at the same time?

    In addition.
To my knowledge, there are no force fields protecting structures that would contain arms and combatants nor will there be any personal shields protecting the combatants themselves. Too heavy and bulky for the wearer, armor is the only protection, and devising armor that will shed or absorb light (phasers) is already possible but devising a material light and compact enough to wear that will deflect, much less absorb or negate the impact of a 20mm or larger round at subsonic speed is not really theoretical.

Plus, a rocket delivered to the ground within a short distance of the combatant would still deliver a mass force affect that would have the same affect on the combatant as the projectile weapon even assuming a force field was used to deflect the collateral matter. The energy however, would still be lethal. The dude would end up tumbling broken to pieces along the combat field inside his force field ball.
As such, phasers and photon torpedoes would be used only in air to air or space to space combat where shield technology would be more easily accommodated by the size of the vessel.

I decided to add a little more engine and that changed the wing supports.
Also added a figure for scale.
I'm starting to like this design but I have a long way to go yet.
