LOL You know how far I got with Black Mirror? Five minutes. There was no way, NO WAY in Hades that I was ever going to watch someone get bullied into fucking a pig. NO WAY. In caps lock. See how serious I am? :-) Honestly, though, I noped out so fast, I didn't even leave a warp trail. Ugh. I have nothing against serious topics, but can we please stop it with the pointless, voyeuristic sadism and the darkness and the over-the-top violence? Also, rape. Come on, TV people. It's been done to death in "shocking" and "edgy" and whatever ways. I've had enough. It's just stupid by this point. I'm happy you lot seem to agree. 8D
I like this edgy stuff but not just this edgy stuff. I kind of like to switch things up. Sometimes I will watch the dark stuff but then I want something more safe and relaxing. I also try not to watch anything to disturbing before bed. Or in a role. It's way more harder to binge watch something like "True Detective." DId that one weekend for the first and second season and that was kind of depressing. "Black Mirror" and "American Horror Story" is different because "Black MIrror" is very complelling and because it's antholgy it shakes things up. "American Horror Story" gets graphic but it's also kind of high camp as well. It's more dark comedy than serious drama a great deal of the time. Jason
I get that. I suppose I just don't like when it's done for shock value. That has lost its impact a long time ago. There are tasteful and respectful ways of portraying the worst of humanity without turning it into a sensation. I'm sure these shows you mentioned handle their darkness well.
Why? What did they do? Agreed. I'm all for arc based storytelling but there still has to be some kind of reward for finishing an individual episode. Heroes seemed to be the worst in that respect. Episodes would just randomly end because the hour was up, not because there had been any sort of mini-climax or change in the status quo. I made it through Season 2 and I guess I liked that season better than most but I still wasn't hooked. While Tru Calling never reached its full potential, you could see the show start to pull itself together once Jason Priestley joined the cast. What?! Season 2 was way better than Season 1. I especially love the episode where he gets trapped in an Iraqi prison.
Absolutely. I was really getting in to it when they pulled it. And they replaced it with Point Pleasant, and that also got pulled the very second it hooked me. The Lost Room didn’t go where I expected either, I thought that would be a longer series.
Big Love and Nip/Tuck also weren't worth continuing (although I only watched the whole first seasons due to having the DVDs).
I liked "Big Love" I have always been nervous about watching Nip/Tuck because I have it in my mind it will have tons of gross surgery stuff. Which is weird because I can watch heads explode and blood fly all over the place in something like "Evil Dead" but when it comes to surgery I all of sudden get to grossed out. To me the two hardest things to watch when done in a graphic nature is rape and surgery. Not to fond of torture either but I can handle that better just as long it isn't that torture porn stuff. With one exception being "The Devils Rejects." I love that horror movie. Jason
Long story short, they basically bullied Gil/Sara shippers more than once during an episode when Gil/Sara were divorcing. To top that off, Gil wrote a letter to Sara that just didn't fit him as a character. Made me not watch the show until the very end of it, as in the series finale. I don't even watch it in reruns now.
I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but The Expanse. It's so slow and plodding and feels like it takes forever to get anywhere. I almost fell asleep watching it. Of course, it doesn't help that I read the first book and didn't care much for it either, so I'm chalking it up to something that just doesn't appeal to me. I was hoping that the TV series would shed a new light on it for me, but it wasn't much better.
Skip that episode and start with the next. Seriously, that is by far the worst Black Mirror episode and the only one that disgusting.
You should at the very least watch the Star Trek episode of "Black Mirror." I think Trek fans who don't usually like the show might at least enjoy that one. Jason
Yeah, that's kinda me too. Although there are a handful of shows where I've watched most of them but just can't quite muster up the interest to finish them. I've still never finished the last half-season of Battlestar Galactica. I've seen scattered episodes from the last two seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but never gave them a full watch-through the way I did Seasons 1-5. I do plan on watching the final season of Community but it's pretty low on my to-do list. I binged the first seasons of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. The Walking Dead just wasn't for me. I don't like zombies or post apocalyptic asssholery, so I'm done. Game of Thrones interests me but my current plan is to wait until it ends and then binge the whole thing in one go. I don't think that I can keep track of it otherwise. "Old" and "new" are easy to determine when there are only two versions. It gets harder when you have something like 4 different versions of The Twilight Zone. I still refer to the 1987-2005 shows as "modern Star Trek" because I can't muster up enough interest to remember that Discovery exists (or to understand why it's a prequel). How did they bully the shippers during the episode? (Keep in mind, I've never seen the show. I just think it's interesting, the relationship between creators and shippers. Lost Girl seemed to be held hostage by the militant Doccubus shippers, who, to be fair, are probably the only reason why the show lasted as long as it did. The writers seemed to be stretching to placate them in the last couple seasons even though the writers had totally lost interest in that pairing by then. The scene in the finale where it's implied that they get together is one of the most halfhearted, perfunctory things I've ever seen.)
I never read the novel but the tv series just bored me to death. I think the premise of it is interesting but the execution of it on screen just did not work for me. It was just dull as dishwater. I have a feeling that I'd like the novels better.
If your looking for a more gentle "Black Mirror" episode I would suggest "Crocodile" from season 4. Jason
