Yep. :( That's what we get for companies having a monopoly, let alone not really giving much of a remote damn about actually fixing the infrastructure, let alone updating it. Fastest I can get where I'm at is around 45mbs. I get 25mbs -- it's not the best, but it's serviceable.

Got some walking done and the weather is still ok. :)

I've got a theoretical maximum of 5 Mbps, but any time I've tested it, it usually tops out around 2 Mbps.

The Gigabit fibre option they offer is basically the same price I'm paying now, so I'd switch to it in an instant... but it's not currently available in my neighbourhood. :sigh:

Dang :(. That sucks. Have a company in my area that has better internet, sadly though it's not available where I'm at either. Still see ads for it though. :sigh: Hope that Gigabit fiber comes to your neighborhood.

Okkay... just checked and it shows that I'm only getting a 13mbps connection. Seriously? Gotta double check this. Tried via Ookla's test and it showed around 16mbps. Still too slow.

When I was a child I was obsessed with the Dizzy games on the XX spectrum. I’ve rediscovered that joy with some absolutely wonderful and devilishly frustrating fan made games.

It was like that forever when cable Internet showed up in the area for me. When I lived in my first house, most of the surrounding area had cable Broadband, but our little nook of town did not have the infrastructure for it. It wasn't until I moved to a different area that I was finally able to get it. By the time I moved back close to my first house cable Internet was available.

I simply could not go back, especially since I basically live on the 'Net.

My friend in SE England kept talking to me about the third-world US and our slow connections so I'd assumed that most of the UK had a much faster connection. My apologies for getting that wrong. :(

Over here it pretty much depends on the distance from the telephone exchange to your local cabinet, and then the distance from that to your property. But SE England is where the money is, the regions get left behind.

While my furnace kept heating yesterday, its fan stopped working so the heat wasn't being distributed. I fiddled with the controls on my thermostat, turning the system on and off, turning the fan to "On" and "Auto", and I waited for a few minutes. Still nothing from my fan.

So I called to get a service person out (my furnace still has a few months of warranty left). Unfortunately, the soonest they'd be able to get out here was this morning between 8-noon. Oy. I set up the appointment, asked if there's an internal fuse for the fan (there sure should be!), and the woman on the other end said she'd need to call back after talking to a technician.

I got off the phone and noticed a noise behind my couch...I lifted myself up so I could better identify it, and it was my furnace fan! It took longer to get going than I thought it would.

The woman called back to tell me that the tech told her that there was not a fuse for the fan (this seems very wrong to me) and I was able to tell her that my system was working again!

    Woohoo! No $89 trip charge!

I don’t know about the UK, but Canadians pay some of the highest prices for the worst speeds and data plans in the first world. As the media loves to keep reminding us. :(

Glad this resolved itself! (Also glad the problem occurred this week rather than last week!!)

I moved the crockpot out of the corner to make way for bread maker and discovered two packets of pickled onion Space Raiders. Awesome.

Judging by the email reply I received this morning, I believe I'm a lock for a high-profile commission with, perhaps, even some influence on a bit of the concept development.

I had to google that. I've never seen anything pickled onion flavor here.

Fresh homemade bread, smothered in lots of butter, and a proper decent mug of coffee to swill it down. Nice.

My bread maker is out of storage and it works a charm.

I "invented" a process yesterday (untested) and couldn't find any information about it so I wasn't sure if it would, in fact, be viable.

Today I changed my search terms and found out that it is a known process, but I've never, ever heard of it before.

While I didn't feel the greatest that I wouldn't be able to patent the idea (not that I would have been able to afford a patent) it did make me happy that at least my thinking is not too far off from others'.

The good news is that this particular process lowers the costs of completing something I would like to complete vs. the other known processes by quite a lot.

It's not perfect for all situations, but it's perfectly appropriate for mine. :)

I've finally found the thing that was making squeaky sounds in the middle of the night! It was a piece of metal in my garden that moved like a weather vane but made so little noise that you could hear it only in the middle of the night when everything was silent (it still annoyed me at times).
