Breakdown of Midnight's Edge Roundtable About Alex Kurtzman

What an awful thing to even be happy about. It’s enjoying the fact that other people will be disappointed because they wanted to see it. It’s like a child cheering because their sibling broke a beloved toy. It’s sick.
It is very disturbing to me the insistence upon malining a show that is not enjoyable rather than moving on and appreciating the shows that are enjoyable.

But this is a great thing for Star Trek fans, according to Doomcock.
I wouldn’t call them fans. Fans tend to want more not less. It’s a great thing for miserable assholes.

It isn’t healthy to constantly focus on things you hate. I find the very idea of hating something so much that you want it to go away instead of finding something else to focus on disgusting. It’s like they’re addicted to hate.

The common justification offered by those espousing such views is that if the Trek they like fails, it will be replaced by Real Trek, since that is What the Fans Want. Alternatively, it stops such instalments from Tarnishing the Star Trek Name.

The perceived change of direction for Discovery in s2 has emboldened advocates of the former view, asserting that their reaction is responsible.

I've not been able to understand either view - failure does not invite further investment, and Trek has survived far worse instalments in Trek than the recent ones.

That’s a delusional way to think. I highly doubt “real Trek” would come back if Discovery were cancelled. It would probably be the end of Trek for about 10 to 20 years.

"Real Trek" was supposed to come back if Enterprise failed and was cancelled.

Yeah.

The problem with Trek is not that they change it. It's that it's stuck.

There's no such thing as 'Real Trek'. That's a subjective idea, everyone has their own idea what 'Real Trek' should be.

That's the joke.
Yeah, even if it came back as a total Berman clone taking place after VOY, there would be a vocal contingent complaining about it (probably including a lot of the folks that dislike Discovery).

Precisely so. If I'm really pedantic about TOS is the only "real Trek" and the rest are spin offs, to varying degrees of success.

However, no matter what, they are Star Trek, warts an all.

Wait, I take that back. There is such thing as 'Real Trek' it's everything made by everyone who has ever made an official Movie/Show under the licence.

So yes, that includes Star Trek V.

Fake Trek is fan films and the like.

No, anything called Star Trek V is not Real Trek™! Both the movie STV and the TV Show ST:V
