Black Panther nominated for best picture ? Ridiculous, it's not even the best Marvel movie and none of the others got that nomination. If there was an award for most culturally significant movie, well maybe...

But there isnt.

I hope it wins. The Best Picture award almost always goes to some shitty film critic darling that is not very good but makes the award people feel smart for choosing. LOTR Return of the King is the last time they had to give in and give a great movie that most people really like the Best Picture Award, and I'm sure they really hated to do it. Black Panther doesn't have any real competition this year, but I don't think the Academy Awards people would ever give an MCU film a Best Picture award, "the academy" is filled with too many people who hate superhero films because they're "beneath them", or out of jealousy for their own films failing/getting ignored (James Cameron is a good example of the second part).

Yet ROTK was a flawed movie, whereas The Two Towers was damned near perfect. Imho anyway.

You just don't understand how this works. The academy tends to reward movies with artistic value. Most blockbusters don't have artistic value. They can be very entertaining, and many people (like me) watch movies for the entertainment value. However I recognize that looking for art in film is just as valid. When you think that your reasons are the only valid reasons to watch anything, you come off as an asshole.

Lets take a look at another "prestigious" award that decided to mostly reward the popular instead of the artistic - the Grammy awards. I think the gramaphone lost a lot of value because of the direction they went.

They're slowly changing their mind on this pretentious attitude. They gave "Shape of Water" the Oscar last year despite it's sci-fi/Fantasy story and the actors all got noms (well, most of them). The Emmys and Golden Globes are willing to recognize sci-fi series like Westworld and Stranger Things now too.

Most comic book movies aren't at that level.

The Academy . . . doesn't always reward movies with artistic values. Sometimes, they reward movies that pretend or that many erroneously believe have artistic value.

I thought that "Return of the King" was crap. For me, "The Two Towers" was tolerable . . . at least the first half. "Fellowship of the Ring" is the only one in that trilogy that I truly enjoyed.

I don't. I don't think "Black Panther" deserves that Best Picture nomination. The film's last half hour was a damn cop out to me. I mean really . . . Wakanda sharing its technology with nations like the U.S., Britain, China, etc., . . . nations that didn't require Wakanda's help? Was this added to appease the white studio suits or what? Talk about undermining the movie's social message. What a cop out!

I guess I missed that part. Are they withholding the tech from other nations????

No. Some people just obsessively think that Wakanda ought to have snubbed all the western nations and only offered help to the rest of the world. Even though the movie explicitly points out that there are many minorities in that western world who could clearly use Wakanda's help because they aren't getting any from their own countries, and T'Challa explicitly chooses those minorities as the first recipients of his aid in that part of the world.

Shape of Water was an artsy fish fucking movie, and easily the worst Del Toro movie I've seen. It deserved a razzie, not an academy award.

Still better than most superhero films. Which is the point.

Oh god, superhero haters get tedious. Most MCU films are great, some of the best films to come out in my life time (so since 1990, basically). But some people only consider artsy shit to be worthy of awards, because god forbid movies that aren't boring, dreary and "realistic" get made and win awards, Obviously the world needs to give pretentious directors like Ang Lee more praise for being boring and incoherent.

Superhero films can be amazing, and most of the MCU ones are better then most of the crap that gets made today. But, some people will never get past the (ironically, very childish) attitude of "Superheroes are for kids". Whether its jealous Hollywood pricks like James Cameron or film snobs, superhero movies will never get the recongnition from film people that they deserve because if a movie isn't 3 hours long, completely incoherent and made by some critical darling like Scorsese, then its just garbage for that terrible "general audience".

One of the things that I dislike about awards and their shows, besides seeing a bunch of 1% just loving each other in their crapulence, is they often snub someone/thing and then feel bad later and give an award to something similar, not necessarily as good, but kind of a "here have this one" award because we really like you, you're almost like people to us.

Wakanda was not withholding tech from other nations. But for some reason, the movie's screenwriters decided to have T'Challa announce to the U.N. that Wakanda would be sharing its tech with all nations - even those nations that did not require the country's help - in the movie's first post-credit scene. Why not have T'Challa follow Nakia's advice to use Wakanda's technology to help oppressed groups in many nations around the world? Just the oppressed groups.

I really don't think the Wakandan social outreach, and science and information exchange programs involve handing out technology to anyone, regardless of nationality or status.
Kimoyo beads won't help disadvantaged people get out of poverty and find a voice for themselves. It's about education (and no, I don't think any of that will include "how to build a sonic cannon that looks like a spear" either.) The only technology I can see the Wakandans sharing openly would mostly be of the medical and agricultural persuasion.
