Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

What I mean is that it was canceled for low ratings.
... and that the Corporate Bigwigs claimed that They wanted to take UPN in a different direction audience wise.
They claimed that They wanted a larger Female Audience and were going to change the programming accordingly.
And then They went with the WWF as Their mainstay.
Go figure.

ENT is one of those things that's better in retrospect. When you binge watch / marathon, you can skip the slow, boring and pointless eps in Seasons 1 and 2, appreciate Season 3's Xindi arc, and see exactly where they were going with Season 4.

It's nicely bingeable because like TOS, there's not as much of it. A rewatch of TNG, DS9, or VOY is a much more substantial commitment. If you skip the bad ENT S1-2 eps, you can get through the series fairly quickly.

It's too bad that Netflix and other streaming options didn't exist in 2004-2005. I think that ENT could've been decent in seasons 5-7. I really enjoyed the post-ENT novels. It's a shame we didn't see that stuff play out on screen and become canon.

It's also a shame that they didn't use an orchestral version of Archer's theme instead of "Faith of the Heart" for the title credits. I tear up every time:

I think I have a soft spot for ENT because it's closest to our own time. I'm one of those fans who only halfway believes that humanity could ever achieve Roddenberry's vision (I think darker scenarios like the Expanse are closer to our own reality's future -- we missed the boat for something better decades ago), so the plucky, aw shucks we're in space nature of Bakkula's Archer works for me. I wouldn't have believed the character if he were more like Kirk, Janeway, or Picard. There are little kids alive today who still will be around in 2112, Archer's birth year. He and the rest of the regular cast felt plausible to me in ways that the novels filled out well. I just find that I enjoy Trek's 22nd century -- a lot.

Anyway, back to Disco. I really appreciate all the nods Discovery makes to ENT as its direct predecessor, from the Defiant in the Mirrorverse to “This brave team will be the first to visit this inhospitable planet since Captain Archer and the crew of the Enterprise NX-01, nearly 100 years ago" about Qo'nos. It warms the cockles of those of us who think ENT got a hard rap back in the day.

The CBS Bigwigs expected UPN to bring in similar numbers that some of the other cable channels were getting at that time, but it wasn't in enough markets around the country to even come close.
And ENTERPRISE got bounced out of its time slot so many times due to sports events, that even die-hards like me had trouble watching it.
Many times I'd have set up my VCR to catch the show while at work that evening, only to find that I had the last hour of some ballgame and only a third to half of the ENTERPRISE episode.
:(

I used to have the same problem with a channel on French tv, each time there was some sporting event they would cancel the series and put the event in their place. This has been resolved the day I decided to practically stop watching tv...;)

Yeah, same here.
Actually when ENTERPRISE got canceled, I also canceled my cable subscription with Time/Warner (saved a buttload of money) and at that point just hooked my PC up to my TV to stream everything.
Been doing that for over a decade now and haven't missed Broadcast TV in the least.

The last two network series I had any use for were That '70s Show and Parks and Recreation. And I watched Parks and Recreation on Netflix.

I apparently missed out on criticisms that DSC isn't your typical "Senior Staff/bridge crew are the main focus" series, and it baffles me that people see this as a weakness.

* sigh *

Read Star Trek Vanguard, people.

Why? If you read Vanguard, Discovery can do nothing but disappoint you. It feels so small and inconsequential compared to Vanguard.

Not the point I was making.

Vanguard is the first ongoing Trek series - Canon or otherwise - to focus on/feature a primary cast of characters that doesn't fit the typical "formula" I mentioned, and is therefore a precursor to what we see on DSC.

Shakespeare could come back to life and write for Discovery. Those same people would still find a way to call it a weakness. "Not even The Great Bard can save The Great Bird!"

People were upset over a couple of scenes in Klingon. Imagine the outrage if one of the greatest Klingon satirist, Shakespeare, would write whole episodes not only in Klingon but in iambic pentametres too.
