GhostBusters 3 is Finally Being Made. (2020 Release)

I can understand Leslie Jones being mad, but it still comes down to the fact that her movie bombed and that's all matters when it comes to these kinds of decisions. It's the same reason they took a break and then did the Kelvinverse movies for Star Trek, and the same reason other franchise starter movies that bombed never got sequels.

GB2 is seriously a beat-for-beat remake of the first Ghostbusters. Opens with the guys being down on their luck, they catch a break, Venkman makes a triumphant pronouncement after their first bust, MONTAGE! (only this time with Run DMC), there's further investigation of the monster, government jackass gets the guys put in jail, the monster begins to wreak havoc across the city so MONTAGE! (only this time with Bobby Brown), the mayor eventually takes their side, giant thing stampedes through the city, the guys beat the monster, theme song as they exit a building to a cheering crowd.

That's true. It's one of those sequels that like to basically retell the first movie with only some slight variations. The upside though is the first movie was good so you got that going for it and you still have fun in the spaces so to speak with the character dialogue and just interacting with each other. The characters still make it work even if the story is totally them just doing the first movie over again.

Those aren't teenagers.

Actually "Stranger Things" is a interesting way to look at it. That show has a adult storyline, teenager storyline and the kids storyline all working next to each other. Even though the kids are the center of the show you can look at it from 3 different age groups. Which I think would be a interesting way to go for the new movie.

I think Leslie Jones has a right to be mad after all the abuse she got from a bunch of entitled man children upset at the reboot purely out of sexism and misogyny. She got the worst of it because she dared to speak out and because of the racism of those same morons. Regardless of the quality of the film, the massive overreaction to it was undeserved and a symptom of a bigger issue in society. I find it very telling that only the female led reboots get this level of hatred and viciousness from these so-called fans, while male led reboots are either accepted or dismissed so quickly they’re forgotten a month after release.

Sure she can be angry about that, but that really is secondary to the fact that the movie didn't do well enough to get a sequel.

Jason Reitman to direct. Continues in the 1984 Universe of the original films with Murray, Ackroyd and Ramis.

Ivan Reitman will produces. New Ghostbusters will be passed the torch from the previous team.

This will have no connection to the Female-led Ghostbusers film from 2016!

Sony is finally smartening up.

Are they really? Judging from their latest installment of the Men In Black I'd bet this new Ghostbusters will be more of the same. Sony is not smartening up; it's more like business as usual.

True, but it does seem like Sony is giving into those who attacked her. It’s letting terrorists win and giving them incentive to do it again because it works.

Not really, they're not going to make a sequel to a movie that flopped. I could maybe, maybe see if got a ton of critical acclaim and awards, but it's only get a 60 on Metacritic and didn't win any major awards.
I have to confess, I still haven't seen it. The trailers looked OK, but there was just so much other stuff out there I wanted to see more that I didn't go to the theater, and I just haven't gotten around to checking it out on Amazon yet.

What would the solution be then...make a sequel to a movie that bombed, or retire Ghostbusters as a brand forever? The scumbags who attacked Jones online didn't tank the movie, people not bothering to go see it did that.

That's pretty extreme language for a movie that hasn't even been shot, and will apparently have a mixed-gender cast. And GB '16 often seemed to be trying to piss off fans of the original, by making the lovable logo ghost a monster, killing Bill Murray for yuks, duplicating story points to much lesser effect, and then sequel-baiting the return of Zuul (not even Gozer, but his minion), as if fans wanted a rehash of the original villain for a second movie rather than something new.

Honestly, I think there were probably a lot more people like me, who had no problem with the cast, but just weren't motivated enough by the promotion to go see it.

Funny how the RoboCop reboot which directly insulted the original design, contradicted the entire point of the original and went out if it’s way to even try to play with what made the original so good was just forgotten.

I would say just let it stay dead, but Sony is so desperate for a hit that they’ll use any franchise they have the rights too.

Not that funny (unless this is the 2016 Ghostbustera kind of "funny").

Go to any sort of comicon. Ghostbusters presence is still strong in many forms. Robocop just doesn't have that grasp by any means and fans are certainly not as passionate.

Ghostbusters died as soon as GB2 hit cinemas in 1989. I heard with the cartoon the franchise or the interests was an all time high but after that film the brand was hurt severely.

Not entirely dead, I believe the game and the comics have been fairly popular. The comics have been coming out pretty steadily since 2008.
Yeah, Ghosbusters is still way to popular for them to just let it die, so the options are either a) do a sequel to the flop reboot, b) do another reboot, c) return to the original universe. Of the three options c) is only one that is almost a guaranteed hit.

I know, I’m a Ghostbusters fan myself. I even made some prop replicas. But I would never harass someone for a remake of it, that’s not passion.

Agreed. But that still doesn't mean Sony should fund a sequel to the '16 movie.

A thought: given the very short time frame between this announcement and the projected release next summer, it seems clear this will be much more modestly budgeted than '16. And one certainly can't argue with that choice, IMO.

I never said they should.

I love how whenever a continuation for something is announced there are always people bitching about how Hollywood doesn't have any new ideas or nobody cares about this old shit. Then those people go watch Doctor Who season 37 and The Last Jedi, or geek out about the upcoming Picard show or Avengers: Endgame (the 22nd film in the MCU and itself based on a 27 year old comic).

Post of the year (so far). Aside from that, if old concepts did not have some potential to make money, the entertainment business would not waste time going back to that well. While it does not mean it will always work (Star Trek: Enterprise, the Speed Racer movie, Ghostbusters reboot, etc.), one can understand how an industry not exactly overflowing with new ideas will go with what once worked. As you point out, some of the complaints come from people supporting franchises over a half century old, so....

I agree that the movie can give off that impression but I am not sure it's really the truth about how the movie came about. WIth the only real truth being the last movie failed at the box office and they aren't about to give up on a possible franchise thus they move onto the next plan to keep it going or I guess I should say get restarted. It just helps that you had this old idea that has been kicking around forever to turn to.

You only options are to go yet to another reboot with all new characters, basically what Spiderman has done or go with some mix of the old with something new kind of like the modern "Star Wars" movies. They choose the later but to be honest I am still not sold on even this being made. If they don't get Bill Murray back all bets are off if even this movie will really be made IMO.
