I'll just have one thread, like with Season 1, so I'll update this weekly with each episode http://trekcore.com/blog/2019/01/star-trek-discovery-canon-connections-brother/ If you guys noticed any I haven't mentioned, or TrekCore didn't mention feel free to add!
Interesting 23rd Century VISOR in "Brother". In "Is There In Truth No Beauty?", Dr. Miranda Jones has a Sensor Web to see. So it looks like VISORs won the Format War until they were replaced with Ocular Implants.
I always assumed that 99% of people with blindness/lack of eye issues just got implants, like Pulaski talked of, and Geordi or his family used an older technology, perhaps upgraded by Geordi himself. There's evidence that he was just plain blind during his youth, no VISOR, no nothing. That's why we never saw VISORs, because most people just got implants. For all we know, Tom Paris or Ezri Dax may have had simple cloned implants in their childhood. And background characters like Ayala or Darien Wallace may have had more advanced ocular implants.
The VISOR reminded me more of a trimmed scene or BTS shot from "The Cage" or WNMHGB where one of the transporter techs was wearing a face-shield or goggles, but I can't find it now.
"There's a canyon to the left!" That was also the voice of the guy you'd hear at the beginning of every Mission: Impossible episode. "Your mission Jim, should you choose to accept it is (insert mission here)... this message will self-destruct in five seconds."
I must've conflated it with some other TOS-era face-gear. Probably Spock's visor from "Is There in Truth No Beauty?"
I think someone mentioned the holographic snake thingy Spock used to scare Burnham is from TAS? I looked briefly through Yesteryear and couldn’t figure it out and I didn’t see it mentioned on your Trekcore review
Weren't Trek and MI both Desilu productions? I know Mr. Leslie can be seen in the background of at least one early MI episode. Both shows shared guests and extras.
It was his voice, yeah. But overdubbed. He wasn't the actor who actually appeared onscreen. I don't know why they did that.
I said in another thread that it might be a dragon Spock mentioned in TOS. But that was just wild speculation
Nhan is pretty clearly a Barzan. She's even listed as one on Memory Alpha. Similar ridges on the forehead. Similar lack of eyebrows. Similar apparatus on both sides of the mouth. Now, this is a bit of an issue, as the Barzan race didn't even have interstellar travel by the time of TNG. But if Saru is in Starfleet, I guess other pre-warp individuals can be too.
Memory Alpha only lists her as a Barzan because she looks like one. It’s part of their common sense policy or whatever it’s called. I agree that she looks like one and probably is one, but it would be nice to have a direct confirmation. While they don’t have interstellar travel, it does mention the species relied on the help from others, we don’t know how long the Federation has known them. Warp travel isn’t the only thing needed for first contact.
