Spoilers An overview of Season 2 set changes

Still - flying cast and crew (and all the other production staff and equipment needed <--- Because I doubt they were renting the cameras locally) to Jordan is much more expensive then a spot in Death valley or some other in U.S. (or Canadian) desert location.

I believe they said they blew a lot of cash for that opening scene, but the producers (obviously) thought it was worth it for the final product.
Shipping the production equipment to Jordan vs Mojave or some place like that may not be that much more expensive in terms of shipping items, and in terms of taxes and crew accommodations, possibly far better. Jordan wants to be a location for film-making and so far that's working out very well.

It would not surprise me if they return there again. Another advantage to filming there for desert scenes, vs Death Valley, (and there are no deserts in Canada, apart from Okanagam which isn't what people normally think of when they think desert, and Carcross, which literally measures one square mile.) is open skies. There are enough deep desert locations that you can find more time to film without having to deal with a jet contrail in post, or just waiting out airliners across the sky. Not that they dont have air traffic as well, but Mojave has non-stop air traffic (and now space launch traffic, ironically)

I'm intrigued by the changes to the sets but confused as to what is actually changing, especially on the bridge. In Season 1 there were FOUR doorways to the main bridge: the turbolift, ready room, and two additional doorways flanking the forward viewer. The ready room had its entrance to the bridge AND a secondary door already, so adding a third one doesn't make sense.

I think the writer got it wrong. The "HAL Corner" they're talking about is actually the not-really-used fifth "doorway" to the bridge, which spent the first season as a GNDN alcove, sometimes with someone standing in it, looking at the blinky lights:

I'm guessing the "HAL" reference is to the HAL9000 computer brain set from the Discovery of 2001 / 2010, which looked similarly like a wall of hard drives. I'd been guessing that this corner was some sort of computer interface room where the guts of the main computer could be accessed without someone popping off a panel.

As of the second season, said alcove has been redone:

The wall of hard drive corner has been largely replaced with a wall of less blinky piping. Some of the original blinkies can still be seen (?) in a faux-corridor that is in fact the new entrance they're talking about in the article.

What this means is that there ARE now five distinct ways people can get onto the bridge set - six if you count that there are two ways people can enter that new aft alcove. The forward doorways were about as used as the equivalent ones on the NX-01 Enterprise - from a filming standpoint it's always cooler (and more efficient) to have people enter from the back of a set and walk into the action from a higher perspective, making a grander entrance as a result. Anyway, I don't seem using that any more than before.

And what do they mean by its now being a science lab? Is this a re-dress for a particular episode? The ACTUAL science lab set has already been seen as a starbase meeting room, a Discovery conference room (with a different table!), and a other things (someone's said it's most recently served as that Tellarite bounty hunter's ship?). it's been mentioned that a key scene shows Pike talking about modding the ready room. I don't see that meaning he'll permanently have said room somewhere else on the ship and Burnham takes it over - it's more likely that the room had been re-dressed IMO.

I think they may have been referring to Lorca's secret lab and called it his ready room by mistake. That's my thought anyways.

Hmm... I understood him as saying that the bridge needed another dramatic entryway. Which may be so, as the turbolift entry to the bridge is "wild" (it'd have to be, right?) and limits the dramatic possibilities somewhat. So I agree that they are building an actual fixed extension of the set behind the HAL doorway - which is good for symmetry, and probably was an original design intent anyway.

As for how much they are building beyond that doorway... I'm quite ready to believe that the old Ready Room becomes a Science Lab, so there's no known demand for a specific new set behind the new door. Pike getting a new Ready Room behind the new door would make no sense. Of course, functionally it would be nice to give people a means of walking onto the bridge when turbolifts are down, but there are those forward doors for such rare needs.

Are we supposed to think this new corridor (and whatever lies beyond) was "always" there? The DS9 runabouts had a blinkie-based back wall originally, yet lacked a doorway that must have been there. Fan blueprints elegantly solved that by making the runabout's HAL wall a movable piece of computing gear, something that would slide back on rails to reveal an aft chamber that then leads to the supposed aft compartments of the craft. The HAL wall here could similarly be a sliding door if need be. I mean, the major console blocks or "stoppers" for the E-D Main Engineering side holes looked perfectly movable in-universe, considering the carpeting beneath and all; such things might be considered common for Starfleet.

We never learned what would be hidden behind the HAL walls of the runabouts or the stoppers of the E-D. Since those spaces obviously weren't regularly accessed, though, "maintenance-nonintensive machinery" would be a good bet. Perhaps the Discovery under Lorca did less science than she will do under Pike, and the putative facility behind the HAL wall is key to making the sensors track Red Angels or whatever? As pure ancillary speculation, that is - TPTB themselves need not bother with creating a rationale there.

Lorca's mancave was just the Brig set (and a couple of others) adjusted as needed. I don't see them giving it any more or less solidity in the near future, not based on the statements so far.

Definitely. Look no further than Context is for Kings, Michael and Landry take the turbolift to the bridge, exit the lift walk through the bridge, observed by Saru in the command chair, and go to Lorca's ready room.

Wondering if what they actually mean about not having other places from which to enter is about not having sets built out behind the apparent doors. There was the one central turbolift behind the captain's chair and the ready room. Guess that all the other entrances were little more than doors that led nowhere, with little to know lighting. Maybe what they hope to accomplish is a fully fleshed out DECK 1. In perhaps one episode I remember seeing people coming from the doors to the front right of the captain's chair (right of navigation/ops). The shot could have started from just after a fictitious door open and closes, fooling into thinking there was something there. Would love to see the side corridors, ready room, briefing room, escape pods, and HEAD (restroom!!). All connected.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Season Two of Star Trek: Discovery will bring some changes to the sets on the show. Actors will now be able to...

Here is what trekcore.com is calling the former ready room now science lab.

Here is a not great image of Lorca's ready room:

I think the size in the second photo is distorted making it look smaller then it actually is. The only thing similar about them is the color scheme indicating that the above science lab or conference room is also adjacent to the bridge. The only other place you see the bronze wall paneling is in Lorca's menagerie/lab, which also appears to be a redress of the Discovery's brig. Notice even the door is smaller in the lab/conference room, and there are lights above doors in the ready room. Let's hope they are fleshing out the ancilary rooms around the bridge on DECK 1. That would be huge. Would love to see the corridors, escape pods, other rooms, and the communal (probably unisex) head/restroom!

Well, we see WASHrooms, including sinks, showers and tubs, on TNG, VOY and ENT. To date I'm 99% sure the only time we've EVER seen an actual toilet on a starship is in the brig of the Enterprise-A, and it was only used as a seat.

Re: the ready room, I've re-read the article and I'm still pretty sure they're talking about having another cool way to get onto the bridge. As for the ready-room-cum-science-lab, I'm hesitant to call it the latter until we actually see it in context (and I'm not convinced the door sizes match); my first blush reaction from the picture above is that it's a conference room or maybe a computer lab. Would they need to have one just off the bridge? It was useful as a conference space on the NX-01, but Discovery's bridge is so much more expansive. I'm still waiting for a railing or console behind the Captain's chair to use up some of that empty space. :P

And yeah, those mysterious forward doors - people may have been seen emerging from them, but have we seen what's actually behind them? I'd love to see a corridor sharply turning to a stairwell, but unlike the Shenzhou's bridge set, this one isn't suspended four meters above the studio floor...

Would anyone have the skills to make a imagined layout/schematic for Deck One of the Discovery? I think that would be so cool!! I'm still hoping for a complete schematics!
