Star Trek 4 Reportedly Shelved

Oh, man. The Doomweenie crowd are going to be insufferable about this. Well, hooray, I guess? They get what they want, a franchise on stasis.

I can't say I'm surprised. The interest from Paramount on a 14th film has been waning. Beyond didn't pull the astronomical numbers they expected and it seemed from that point on some of the air went out of the balloon and it has been gradually getting smaller and smaller with the years. Pine walking away was probably the final straw and they've been on life support since.

A shame. I actually enjoyed Beyond. It was nice to finally see the crew more experienced after 2 films were spent getting things off the ground. It was also nice to finally get away from Earth for once. With all the attacks on Earth I was starting to wonder why anyone would ever want to live on Earth.

I think Pixelmagic probably has it right, it'll probably be mid to late 2020's before we see a new Star Trek film. It may take a reunification of Paramount and CBS to really make it happen, assuming that happens and Discovery and the other upcoming series do well enough that a reunited company decides it's worth it to splurge on a new film.

At this point, there's no telling when we'll ever see a Star Trek movie again. If it happens in the next 5 years I'll be shocked. Probably more like 8 to 10.
i've been digging my heels in about this because i thought it was premature to call trek 4 dead. but with clarkson gone, yeah it's probably dead.

however, there's no way paramount would let the property languish for 10 or 8 or even 5 years. bumblebee didn't perform well at the box office, but there will be more transformers movies soon - whether or not they're connected to the bay films or bumblebee remains to be seen. the same is true for trek, it'll be back - what form it takes is the question.

The problem has always stemmed from Paramount trying to make this franchise into a blockbuster series on the level of Marvel or Star Wars by giving the films insanely large budgets. Truth of the matter is Trek is just not that popular enough to justify such large budgets, and now that they tried to ask Pine to take lesser paycheck it backfired on them. From this point on they'll probably try to do any future Trek project more in the mid-budget range like with the earlier films.

I think they got sky high expectations after Star Trek (2009) and STID made blockbuster levels of money also. But in a niche franchise like Star Trek that's hard to maintain. TWOK, FC and maybe TVH are the other films that reached blockbuster proportions, but not quite at that level, and they of course had much more modest budgets.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some of the best Star Trek hasn't been done with rich budgets in mind. Perhaps it will lead to a stronger story.

No way we get a Star Trek movie that soon.
It only took two years after Paramount approached Abrams to have Star Trek 2009 in theaters. If they greenlight another movie in the next six months, it's possible to get it in theaters two years after that.

I have a really hard time seeing them regrouping that quickly. Paramount is a mess. I'd look for 2024/25, and possibly with a new studio.
