As asinine as AP has been about this whole affair, I do marvel at his ability to keep this befuddling perpetual motion machine rolling. I honestly never would have expected it to go on this long after the lawsuit. A true Energizer rabbit, that one.

A couple things work in his favor: Firstly, he's managed to make himself look like the underdog in a David vs. Goliath against CBS. Their execution of the newest Star Trek franchise as something less than perfect in every way gives him wriggle room to make it seem like CBS doesn't care, like they're trying to erase True Star Trek™ and only people like Alec, and especially Alec, are going to save it. That alone gives him ridiculous influence.

Secondly, he seems to draw the same type of crowds that are attracted to Multi-level marketing scams. If they believe a little harder, if they work a little more, if they give a little more money, if they put everything they have in it, and most importantly they must talk it up like it's already real, then their dream of a perfect Real Star Trek™ film will come true.

Actually, I think the settlement would preclude Alec doing a Patreon with the name 'Axanar' attached as Patreon IS still considered public crowdfunding. Alec could claim the Patreon is for something unrelated to Axanar, but if he publicly attached anything Axanar related to it, or mentioned Axanar financial support in anything produced by said Patreon he would be in violation of the settlement.

That said, if the above scenario played out, it would be up to CBS/Paramount as to whether they wanted to file a court pleading showing that Alec had violated said settlement, and if so, they're back in court again.

I expect he'll try to build the patreon around the studio instead of axanar especially since it appears OWC isn't paying the rent anymore so it will probably be continuos funding for the work of OWC/Ares/Valyrie/Industry studios/warehouse/storage shed.

There are Fan productions that rely solely on donated talent and there are others that supplement with professional aid.
Correct me if I'm wrong but when it comes to a convention judging / Award ceremony you could have a $50 thousand dollar and a Thousand dollar production judged side by side.
Even before 2016 Fan Film meant volunteer, not professional, save for safety issues.
Question: Is it time for Award ceremony show runners to upgrade in order to better reflect the current guidelines?

Honestly I don't think film festivals should allow fanfilms to qualify for awards unless they are in a fanfilm-only category because the familiarity of the IPs makes them automatically have a leg up in some ways.

I've participated in enough film contests to know audience awards are easily bought by familiarity and high production values.

Yeah, heh. I don't really have time to comment (I have very little time these days), could only stomach that clip for about a minute and a half.

Once again, the BIG WIN FOR AXANAR was AP not losing everything he owned, and retaining the opportunity to do something with the stuff he already has.

And he hasn't. For 2 years.

It looks like the deal with OWC was simply for one year. So it isn't so much that they left but more so the deal expired.

So the donors spent $500K or so plus rent to retrofit a warehouse into a non-soundproof studio. When Alec left he supposedly left all the equipment and stuff behind for the owner.. you know all the stuff the donors paid for.

and what is all that donor investment going for today?

Nothing. The space is now the HQ for a motorcycle gear company and all that donor money spent retrofitting the warehouse amounts to nothing,

Sleeping on it, I'm probably asking for some financial oversight which is no fun.
Over time I've enjoyed the aspects of doing more with less. ($$). I feel we have done well in that respect.
Generally the human condition demands to know where they stand in the scheme of things relative to their peers.
Panels and judging contests have never answered this for me because more often than not the best film wins. The best films normally works with the best assets and I have no problem with that. It just doesn't tell me anything I don't already know.
