stumbled accross something today....

So the donors spent $500K or so plus rent to retrofit a warehouse into a non-soundproof studio. When Alec left he supposedly left all the equipment and stuff behind for the owner.. you know all the stuff the donors paid for.

and what is all that donor investment going for today?

Nothing. The space is now the HQ for a motorcycle gear company and all that donor money spent retrofitting the warehouse amounts to nothing,
I'm sure they're loving that carpet.
 
RMB has dropped a ton of Axanar VFX footage with commentary. I'm pretty sure Alec planned to use some of that footage in Axanar Lite, so I am sure he's thrilled. Click!
 
Since a lot of people are commenting about projects on Kickstarter in this thread, I'm curious about what everyone thinks about a Kickstarter for an original sci-fi series being produced by Spacedock: The Sojourn.

Given that this was right after he posted a think about how many subs and views and comments he got in the past week, makes me think he did something wrong there (buying views or spam or something like that).

I expect he will blame it on CBS with the narrative of that they know DSC season 2 is crap and with axanar going back into production they are worried and want to make sure that Axanar can't take away from DSC. Blah blah blah

The Sojourn is an original project based on original material which makes the Kickstarter for it perfectly legitimate...and therefore utterly off-topic for this thread (and arguably for this whole forum.)

There wasn't enough money fro that. When the property sold in 2008, it was around 2.2M. He had a 3 year lease IIRC.

So even if all of Alec's grandiose plans had worked and he spent $1M+ to change a warehouse into a soundstage and it had worked and big productions were lining up to use the space, his landlord could have said "thanks for all the improvements to the property. I'm not renewing your lease".

When he vacated he had around 8 months left on the lease so there is no guarantee he'd still be in that property today.

Would he have? I don't know. But a sane person doesn't put himself in that situation. To justify the $1M or so in improvements he would need to at least make that much back in profit BEFORE the end of the lease.

Reminds me an episode of hotel impossible I saw not too long ago where the owner of the hotel didn't own the land it was on and had something like a 15 year lease on the land. Hotel needed a lot of work and they were having to crunch the numbers to see if it even made sense running calculations like "If you put $5M in renovations into the hotel, you;d need to increase revenue by this much every year just to beak even over that 15 year time span and then determine if that is realistic or not". That is how those kind of things are done in the real world.
I still live with my mom, so I don't deal with this kind of stuff, but it seems to me that it would be a bit odd to spend that much money fixing up a place you don't actually own. Isn't it usually the landlord who's in charge of that kind of stuff rather than the person renting it?

Not really. If you are renting a retail space, the landlord isn't going to pay to make it look like a GAP. That's on you. Alec made the mistake of spending a ton of money on a space that wasn't going to see any INCOME to pay the rent. And it was a lot of rent he was going to have to pay. With studio spaces you can rent in the city, why would anyone want to shoot in his substandard warehouse?

If he had spent the money on one of those rental spaces, he could've had a movie by now, probably wouldn't have been sued, and this whole thread would never have existed. #ThanksAlec
 
Most tenants don’t do that sort of renovations, because it’s usually not allowed by landlords or whoever handles the property. The logic is that if you make the space too unique to your needs, the landlord will have trouble getting new tenants later. So they’ll either have to settle for cheaper rent, or spend money renovating it back.

There’s also shit you just blanket can’t do, like knocking out foundation walls, building without a permit, not getting your piping/wiring checked, etc. But that’s true for any sort of renovations, not just renters.

Considering the landlord hasn’t been online pitching a fit, it doesn’t look like Peters was underhanded on that level. Besides how it was all funded, anyway.
 
I may be mistaken, but it seems like I read that the owner of the building agreed to let AP out of the lease in exchange for the improvements to the property (or something like that). Then shortly after, like within a few months, the owner passed away.

Like I say, I could be mistaken but that's what I remember.

RMB also put up Bill Hunt's version of the script. I'll be reading it off and on over the next week. (It'll probably take me that long in spare time).

When I contributed to Axanar, I didn't like the idea of the studio, especially converting a warehouse over to one using donor funds. It would have been cheaper to rent a soundstage, have the sets built, shoot the move, take the sets down, and then put them into storage. I made sure that the perk I selected would be something from the movie, and not the studio. What made me angry as a donor was Alec giving up the studio in California. All that money now wasted.

I did watch RMB's effects video. I wasn't impressed with it, really wasn't wowed by it, but I thought it would've been an interesting sequence.

I feel bad for anyone who donated money to Alec. All you folks wanted was a great adventure set in the Star Trek universe. What you got was a financial boondoggle.
