And O'Brien envies Scotty.
I'm not so sure. Scotty seemed lonely and looking for love at times (Carolyn Palamas, Mira Romaine, Uhura?). O'Brien and Keiko may have had some marital problems, but they stayed together, seemed to have real love and had a child. O'Brien may have pondered on it during his troubled times, but in the long run, I think he is happy to be married to Keiko. Plus he built a great friendship with Bashir and gets to play darts and drink beer in the bar. Maybe this is why he seemed tried on the job due to off-the-job family plus play time. And I don't think he had any real love for DS9; all it did was break down due to shoddy Cardassian construction. But staying on topic, I still voted for Scotty as the better engineer even though I still liked O'Brien.

Just about right except O’Brien said that he prefers his busy schedule on DS9 because he was always bored in the transporter room waiting for it to break so he would have something to do.

Scotty. People have become real life engineers because of James Doohan's character. I've never heard anyone say "Yeah, I became an engineer because of Trip Tucker."

And I heard it from a very good trainee, a young mechatronic engineer who becomes only in two years a team leader. I think it is a generation issue. Every generation has it own heroes. :techman:

For so many young people TOS is hard to watch, so they know Scotty only from Kelvin Timeline. What a pity!

One thing I want to add the discussion. As an engineer with two engineer titles, I would say for me original Scotty and O'Brian are very exceptional technicians, but not good engineers. They can fix the (almost all) problems but, they are not very good at to convert their experiences to theoretical knowledge or visa versa. That is the difference what makes a good engineer, so for me, for this definition Tucker and La Forge are the best candidates. Torres is disqualified with her unlimited resources and self-repairing magic ship.
