THE ORVILLE S2, E1: "JA'LOJA"

Absolutely stupid and irrelevant question: do you think that, in universe, Kitan's lips are naturally of that color or it's the make-up chosen by the character..?

(Yes, I know, incredibly stupid question....)

Low gravity means very low blood pressure?

Very low blood pressure means blue lips?

She may just paint her lips to get back to Selaan standard?

I really enjoyed the episode and the "day in the life" feeling of it. I wonder whether the people who take issue with it felt the same way about "Lower Decks" or other Trek episodes where, bluntly, not much happened?
But something did happen in Lower Decks. We got to see and hear from a portion of the crew almost never featured in 6 previous seasons. That was a fairly unique moment IMHO. Family is one where only personal or side stories are told, but in that one, we're coming off maybe the biggest event in the whole series, where an aftermath for its most prominent victim is entirely necessary. It's an appropriate downtime episode

For your comparison, I'd say Data's Day is the closest parallel to this one, bearing similarity to the old Dear Dad M*A*S*H episodes, which take the form of a correspondence that details characters & current events. Ja'Loja doesn't even have that basis at its core though. It's really just "Date Night" with a side plot about Claire's kids, & while it still had fun moments, & I didn't mind it all that much, I'd have preferred if it had been squeezed in, later on in the season, & not been the premiere, because while it won't discourage me from watching the show, those people who'd never seen it, or who'd given it a chance, are not seeing the best they're producing imho, & might not come back.

Family, Data's Day, Lower Decks, all of those episodes are placed into the middle of seasons, when we're already along for the ride, & are but 3 of 176 episodes. Ja'Loja is Orville's 13th, & only it's 2nd premier. Now is surely not the time for a fluff, phoned in episode imho

Not that I can claim TNG did any better with their season 2 premiere. The Child? Blech

I haven't seen the S2 episode yet and I don't mind spoilers. Any information given on Alara's status?

It's clearly lipstick. Her parents didn't lips so deep a shade of red.

Alara is staying on the show until Home the third episode. After which she gets Jonas Quinned with a new Xeleyan security officer.
Wasn't there a third boy in the alcohol drinking scene? I was wondering where his parents were?
Most likely his parents know he's not an angel and wouldn't allow him to try and shift the blame on anyone else.

One shouldn't assume.

That's true of course but with Hollywood being Hollywood it's kind of hard not to be skeptical. Of course I do expect the inevitable canon debates. Why didn't she have a mole in the flashback short trek when she will have one in the future and yet it then vanishes again. This will be THE canon question of canon questions of 2019.:)

Oh, sweet shit. You want to moan about Tilly's mole, the Disco forum is having a field day about it. No need to derail Orville threads about it.

I'm still enjoying this show very much. I still haven't seen more than the first hour of Discovery. Orville wins!

Goddammit. She was my favorite character. I still don't care for Ed, with how manchild he is, & Kelly will be pigeon held to their on again/off again storyline for however long. Claire is cool, but I wish like hell she got more than just parent stuff. She needs a shipwide infection or something to solve. It's another reason I wish they'd moved this episode to later in the season. The character hasn't even had much screen time yet, & this makes the second sizable story of hers to focus mainly on parenting, in a baker's dozen episodes

Bortus is barely more than a running gag at this point, who gets all the silly alien lampooning, & Gordon is mostly just the schlep who has to carry most of MacFarlane's puerile humor. Gonna to be hard to grow him decently. Lamarr might have to be my new favorite character, assuming they can do something good with him down in engineering, but I'm not so sure how well the actor is going to work with that. I'd prefer they open up Claire as more than just a mom. She too has the potential to be my favorite

I'm gonna miss Alara, & I fear the show will too :(
