Deanna Troi

Penny Johnson Jerald is 57, old by most TV standards (but 15 years younger than me).

Gosh! You're really old.:ack:
Oops, sorry, I got distracted for a second there.

Hey, Penny Johnson looks really good, no matter her age.
Which goes to my original premise of no fat old, ugly women allowed.
But fat, old, ugly men? They abound in TV and Movies.

So, you don't think veteran regulars like Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden who've been on the series for more than 4 seasons are not giving the make-up and hair talent some insight on what would make them look better??? I mean, Sirtis in season 7 stylized bangs for her hair, and she's had them through out her movie run, you wouldn't call that a choice? Or it was all the hairstylist's master plan???

ROTFLMAO!
She was allowed to have her hairstyle adjusted to have bangs!

Wow! Such liberties!
I'm shocked and amazed!
Well I guess she showed those guys!
Good for her!
Girl power!

Hairstylists, along with make up artists, are not totalitarians they're open to suggestions to make the performer as beautiful as possible. It's a mutual foundation of artists working together to get the best product out there, the industry is all about collaborations.

Yeah but nothing get changed without productions approval, especially in sci-fi. I just played an alien in a film coming out next summer, spent a week in make up tests before the director and producers signed off. They did not care what we thought, same went for the leads. The "look" was decided long before and they had to deal with it while filming.

So,
Probably if Deanna had gained 50 lbs.
like another main character, she probably would have been "let go".

What are you talking about? Are you talking about Frakes? Was someone ever “let go” for their looks?

This includes 99.99% of all American Television and movies since the inception of Television and movies.

Shows about fat, old women either do not exist or don't last. (99.99%) This is predominantly in regard to America.
It may be true in other countries also but I don't see enough of those films to know.

It's always been my view that as a society we are that superficial. Unfortunately, this gets reflected in our media. But even your average person is unduly obsessed with appearance. Frankly, it's something about us as a species that I find greatly disturbing.

Of course because of continuity, but I was talking about the span of several seasons and in those seasons I was referring to there were multiple changes of hairstyles and make up between the two women. I'm sure the based on what was seen there was approval.

Not that I know of, but as we know Marina, who appeared to have gained weight, through out Voyager and Enterprise run was still hired to come back and played her iconic role and looked as beautiful as I've ever seen her... with bangs I might add, and her choice*.

*With the approval of production of course.;)

Just going by what I have seen on set........I saw a 2 time Oscar winner show up to hair and make up a couple of months ago with shoulder length brown hair, and when she got to set it was spiky and white. Because costume design had it all preplanned.

Troi's only function as a character, at least as originally envisioned, was as a potential (and later actual) sexual partner for the dark-skinned klingon Worf.

Of course a racist outcry made it necessary for the writers to sort of go back and forth before the series was over, no further damage could be done, and they could finally be married in Nemesis.

I will always cry for what the series could have been if only the fans could have been a little more open-minded.

Troi's original function was to look after the mental health and well-being of over 1000 people, from officers and crew to family members and civilian contractors, on long-duration missions of exploration, whilst also being an alien with telepathic abilities and a former serious relationship with Riker, to help add some drama to proceedings.

As with other series as writers and actors become more familiar with the roles, then things evolve from there, such as the relationship between Troi and Worf, or her promotion to Commander and move to wearing standard uniform.
