Agreed. Absolutely she is deffinately underappreciated. I always thought soIndeed. Troi is an under appreciated character.
It should also be considered that given everything the ship went through over the course of seven years, she was probably continuously swamped with work. 1000+ people, 178 episodes of drama and danger...yeah, she was busy.
and probably pretty stressed out as well. given the fact that she's an empath as well. Poor Deanna she must have been a little bit overwhelmed emtionally herself, with all the emotions of over 1,000 people and their families.
Troi was a stronger character when she had zero involvement on the bridge; I thought her diplomatic position was quite useful and it was nice to have her reflect some sort of beauty and allure which was sorely lacking during 3rd and 7th season where the outfits became waaaaaaay too conservative to be Star Trek. DS9 made an attempt to get back to form... until the war seasons came around.Indeed. Troi is an under appreciated character.

Outside from the story aspect, I sense there was some sort of alluring competition between Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden. I think it was season 5 where Gates hair and make up became amorous, even her uniform was complimenting her body as well and Marina took notice and the beauty war began. I notice the touches done on her new well fitted starfleet uniform during Chain of Command and how her hairstyles complimented the change. This was no accident there was a competition.
The shows don't have to be about fat or old women to feature them as high profile characters. Older characters can add a great dimension to a series (the Expanse, NuBSG, the Orville, Discovery etc).I doubt that the actress goes in and decides what or how she wants her hair, makeup or clothes to look.
Some actresses may be able to dictate these things, doubtful for her.
In addition, do you actually think either of them was expected to be anything other than the sexy underling?
This includes Yar also.
This includes 99.99% of all American Television and movies since the inception of Television and movies.
Shows about fat, old women either do not exist or don't last. (99.99%) This is predominantly in regard to America.
It may be true in other countries also but I don't see enough of those films to know.
I'm only familiar with Orville, but I can't think of any females on that show that aren't pretty good looking. The shows don't have to be about fat or old women to feature them as high profile characters. Penny Johnson Jerald is 57, old by most TV standards (but 15 years younger than me).I'm only familiar with Orville, but I can't think of any females on that show that aren't pretty good looking.
And how old do you think "old" is?
Still the percentage you mentioned is that 0.01%.

Chuckle... sure, most shows would fail if their essential and/or most popular characters were eliminated...There were only 2 characters who were awesome on TNG, that was Q and the one and only Captain Jean-Luc Picard. And with what you're saying, Dr Crusher was not alone on that list. Simply take out Picard and Q from TNG in it's 4th season, then what do you have??? Better yet take Picard out of the 2nd season and tell me what do you have??? All the potential of awesome characters would remote to sh*t if there's no Jean-Luc Picard; the characters were successful, including Dr. Crusher, as long as Picard was over their shoulders.
