Netflix greenlights new "Lost in Space"

I stopped reading "this is the worst" articles because they're so damned easy to write, and the authors cash in on the negativity.

I loved it. I thought it was very well-written and beautifully made. Meanwhile, EW's "critique" of it is glib and superficial and doesn't really have a point beyond it being different from the source, which is the most cliched, stupidest possible reason to complain about a remake/adaptation. Heck, in this case it's an asset, since the original show mostly failed to live up to its potential. I love the remake because it succeeds at being what the original was intended to be before it got dragged off-course.
Completely agree. I think this and RDM's Battlestar Galactica are two of the best examples of reboots that are better than the original, for me at least.

Oh please let this end better than that did.

I was hoping for a trailer for season 2.

Yes, a tight knit nuclear family; oh, wait!

It was originally supposed to be a family-oriented survival drama. The new show achieved that very well, focusing heavily on the hazards of the environment and the creative solutions the characters needed to devise to survive them. I love that kind of problem-solving story, where characters have to think their way out of a problem and solve it using knowledge and creativity.

I have to admit I have yet to finish watching the season, and I really went into this with an optimistic attitude.

It's not that it's bad. It's just that by trying to make it so grounded it didn't have enough sense of high adventure. I agree with the review that it stretches too little material over too long a runtime. I'm curious to know what the deal is with the robot but I don't want to wait over 10 episodes of IV drip clues to get there.

I also do not like the idea of having all these extra random survivors floating around from other ships. It completely changes the vibe of the show from one of complete isolation to more of a communal group dynamic.

Also would have been much better with pulpy laser pistols and rifles rather than one lousy 3d printed gun.

I mean, the iconic thing with LiS is the ship facing down an army of slow-moving zombie-like monsters that are angry because Dr. Smith stole some sacred amulet or something, having them bang up against the force-field, etc... That's what LiS is supposed to be about, this constant wave of aliens being used to teach morality lessons in karmic payback. I'm not seeing it.

Hopefully they shift the show towards a more high-adventure direction with the second season.

Wow, I've never agreed with you more.

I loved this LIS, I hope they will make another season.

I thought it had a great sense of adventure, of constant peril and challenge and heroic rescues/escapes.

It works for me. It allows the show to feature guest stars beyond the core cast without the contrivance of having humanoid aliens routinely dropping by this uninhabited planet. And it allows greater diversity in the casting, given that the Robinsons are mostly white.

What LiS was supposed to be was a show about a family trying to survive the hazards of space, with Dr. Smith as an added complication rather than the center of all things. What it became fell far short of what it was supposed to be. The new show achieves what the original tried and failed to do.

Entertainment Weekly's Daren Franich and Kristen Baldwin have named Lost In Space the #1 worst new series of 2018.
I'm really shocked to see this, because I really like the show. It's not the best thing I've ever watched, but I it's definitely very, very far from deserving this kind of thing.
I actually just went back to watching it this week after taking a break to finish up some other shows I had started before.

As if the original Lost in Space was all that great. Even when I was a kid and pretty much liked everything I watched on tv I never really liked it all that much. I'm glad that the new show has little in common with it I'm still stuck on episode 6. I find it to be kind of slow and some of the episodes are a little too long. And I really don't care much about the characters other than the robot and Dr. Smith right now. It's not a bad show. And there are so many worse shows than this so it's unfair to call it the worst new show of the year.

I agree. I adore the show and can't wait for season 2. That writer can go suck a big one.

Another thing about the new show is that it's beautifully filmed. The lighting and art is right there on display for all to see.

Yeah, they do an excellent job making the usual Vancouver-area locations look like an lushly alien world. It's probably the best-looking SF show of the season.

You know that's so true..

I just had a funny thought and it's a pitty we are in 2018. Imagine the fun if you had the cast of SG1 and a few other shows bump into each other in the same general area while filming. A hilarious cross over would ensue.

Yeah, when I first saw the trailers and such for this I thought it looked horrible. When I gave it a watch I was pleasantly surprised and really, really enjoyed it.

Yes, with a pulpy B&W sci-fi noir feel, accentuated with John Williams great music. Even minus Dr. Smith, there is a suspenseful vibe. I don't think the new show achieves that, or at least not nearly often enough. It's trying so hard to prove that it can be a serious drama that the energy fizzles off. It kind of overcompensated.

Out of all the characters I think the new Penny fares the best. She sort of has a self-deprecating Daria sarcasm thing going which is an innovation over the old Penny. With the others, I think they tried too hard to make them flawed and insecure in order to give them an arc. I just felt the gameplan they setup for each character's growth was too predictable.

I love the remake because it succeeds at being what the original was intended to be before it got dragged off-course.

And the thing I really love about it is how they made use of the new technologies to make their world feel alive along with great cinematography. It's positively gorgeous at times and really takes advantage of modern techniques. It's not often we come across a sci-fi show where we can say that the worlds they feature feel truly alien. I think it's the best kind of update it could possibly have had. And it's a hopeful show too. There's a bit of darkness, but I feel in general that it's well-balanced. In general, I think 2018 was a pretty good year for Sci-fi. Not one, not two, but three successful spacebound TV shows?

I think it achieved it often enough, alongside drama, humor, and a sense of wonder. I don't think suspense and drama and other factors in a show are in competition with each other. It's bad for a show to have only one tone.
